The Gene Pool: JTR's Colorful Family History

FROSSARD'S BALL THEORIES & REFERENCES

The following are the research notes of
Mrs. J.H. Frossard of Madisonville, Texas
These notes came with some of her family group sheets.

I. Ancestor Charts, Ball Family.

A.

Family Group - John Ball of Northamptonshire, England
Family Group - Richard Ball of London, England.
Family Group - William Ball of Wiltshire, England

B.

Family Group - Lawrence Ball of Northamptonshire, England.
Family Group - Rev. Richard Ball of Northamptonshire, England.
Family Group - William Ball of Wiltshire, England

1. Hayden, "Virginia Genealogies, Glassell Family" pp. 46-51, 737-8. (Ball Reference #1)

2. Wills from England.

COMMENT:

A. The first two worksheets are wills found in the Hayden book "Errata." I have charted the will of Richard Ball, wife, Anne (Burnell) Ball as our ancestor. The third will of Anne (Burnell) Ball was located in New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 48, p. 273 (Ball Ref. #2). I have charted this will as being the wife of above charted Richard. They mention the same sons, but it seems strange that Richard did not mention the daughters in his will. Note the footnote on this page, "Mrs. Ball's husband was Richard, son of John Ball of Wellingborow, Northamptonshire."

B. The father of Richard Ball, D.D., in Hayden's book is listed as Lawrence Ball of Northamptonshire. Note the following:

(1) p. 46: Richard Ball, D.D. , son of Lawrence received 1673 (maybe 1613?) the grant of the arms borne by Col. Wm. Ball, Millenbeck, Va.

(2) p. 49: William Ball of Millenbeck, Va. brought with him from England a coat of arms which is still preserved in his family. William came from England about 1635-40 and was in Va. in 1650. Was this the coat of arms granted in 1673? (or 1613?)

(3) p. 49: These arms are given by Burke in his general Armory as those of Ball of Northamptonshire, England, granted 1613. Could the above reference (Richard Ball, D.D.) be a misprint? I know nothing about "Coats of Arms". Could the above reference (Richard Ball, D.D.) be a misprint? I know nothing about "Coats of Arms" and the grant of same, and do hope some one can enlighten me on this.

C. WILL #4. John Ball of St. Mary Bowe, London, proven 1638, is from Banks Topographical Dictionary, (Ball Ref. #3-A) and NEH&GR Vol. 54, p. 96 (Ball Ref. #3-B). I was not allowed to get a zerox copy of this due to age and condition of book but I copied it because of the similarity of names: His wife was a Cooke, (Anne's daughter, Mary, m. John Cooke); he mentions his uncle Alling Ball, and cousin, Alling Ball, and his cousin, William Ball, "now beyond the sea". This is also the 1st reference in Colket "Founders of Early American Families. (Ball Ref. #11)

D. WILL #5. I copied this will due to the similarity of names: "Mrs. Anne Ball, London, Mr. Richard Ball of London, Mr. John Ball of London.

E. There seems to be two separate lines of Balls: Lawrence, with a son, Richard, and John, with a son, Richard (both from Northamptonshire). Which (if either) do you think is correct line? I am charting William of Wiltshire as a son of Richard of London, wife, Anne Burnell Ball. Do I have an extra generation here? (You can see that I really need help.)

(Refer to C. Just noticed I omitted something that I wanted to call to your attention. Will #4 - see reference to Alling Ball's sisters, wife of Thomas Fugill and wife of James Russell in (Ball Ref. #17). This reference is for a later date, 1646.

3. Errors referred to in Hayden:

A. Price, "The Sydney-Smith and Clagett-Price Genealogy" (Ball Ref. #34)

B. Burke, "American Families" p. 2545 (Ball Ref. #5)

4. "Union Records, Jan. and March, 1903" (Ball Ref. #6)

5. Virkus, "Immigrants to America Before 1750" pp. 141-3. (Ball Ref. #7)

A. In some instances the new England and Virginia Ball brothers are listed as being sons of Rev. Richard ball of the Lawrence Ball line and in other instances as being sons of William Ball of Wiltshire, England. (Not reference under William Ball to Hayden and Union Record."

B. Note reference to coming to Conn. with Rev. Davenport. I have not been able to do any research on Rev. Davenport to ascertain if his references would assist us in our Ball research.

6. Savage, "A Genealogical Dictionary of First Settlers of New England," pp. 105-6. Note: William Ball of New Haven, 1643, d. Apr. 1648. Could this have been Susanna Ball's father? (She married Thomas Blatchley of East Haven, Conn.) and was the mother-in-law of Edward Ball. I also wonder if Edward Ball and Abigail Blatchley were related?) Ball Ref. #8)

7. Colket, "Founders of Early American Families," p. 16 (Ball Ref. #9). Hope you can locate these references that may shed some light on our problems.

8. Norton, "Centennial History of Madison Co., Ill." p. 1119. (Ball Ref. #10)

9. Ball, Bonnie S. "The Balls of Fairfax and Stafford in Va.", p. vi-ix. (Ball Ref. #11). Note: have been unable to locate the reference mentioned.

10. "Dow, Ball, Eaton & Allied Families" p. 16. (Ball Ref. #12)

11. Holmes, "Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families, 1620-1700" p. xii. (Ball Ref. #13)

12. Farmers, "Genealogical Register" p. 24 (Ball Ref. #14)

II. ALLING (ALLEN) BALL

A. Family Group - Alling Ball & Susan

B. Family Group - Alling Ball & Dorothy Tuttle

Note: Nowhere have I found any proof that Edward Ball was the son of Alling and Susan. In fact, I have no proof that they had any children. However, I have these 4 references:

(1) "The Union Record" p. 46 (Ball Ref. #4) "Many descendants of Edward Ball, the oldest son of Alling Ball of Conn. were in New Jersey."

(2) Virkus, "Immigrants to America Before 1750" p. 141 (Ball Ref. #5). "Edward Ball, perhaps son of Alling Ball of New Haven."

(3) Ball, Bonnie S. "The Ball of Fairfax and Stafford in Va. "p. vi. (Ball Ref. #11). "Edward Ball was son of Alling (or Allen) Ball.

Therefore, I am charting our ancestor, Edward Ball, as being the son of Alling and Susan Ball as he is not listed as son of Alling and Dorothy Ball.

13. "New England Historical and Genealogical Register" Vol. 61, p. 118. Ball Ref. #17) "Alling Ball of New Haven, Conn. and His Descendants."

Note: Please check for the three references for Alling ball mentioned in Colket, "Founders of Early American Families" (Ball Ref. #9)

(1) NEH&GR Vol. 54, p. 96 (Ball Ref. #3) I was able to locate this reference but was unable to get a copy.

(2) "The American Genealogist," Vol. 10, p. 208.

(3) Pamphlet - "Allen Ball, 1916"

14. Dodd. "The East-Haven Register" (Ball Ref. #18)

Note: Due to the poor condition of this book, the librarian would not allow me to get zerox copies, so I copied this while in the Clayton Library at Houston and then typed it later.

15. Pridle, "Ancestry of Elizabeth Barrett Gillespie" p. 168 (Ball Ref. #19)

16. Read "Blatchley Papers (Ball Ref.#20)

(1) Reference is from Virkus, Vol. IV, p. 134, stating that Susanna Ball was the daughter of Alling and Dorothy Ball. This is an error, as Susanna Ball and Alling Ball were of the same generation and if our theories are correct, then the son of Alling Ball married the daughter of Susanna Ball Blatchley. The question comes to mind "Were Susanna Ball and Alling Ball related?"

III. EDWARD BALL
