The plantation has been described as "probably the most completely authentic example of what a working 19th century plantation looked like." The primary crop was cotton.
The main house with Greek Revival columns, was the center piece of a 3,000 acre plantation. Virtually unaltered since that time, the home is furnished by period pieces.
One of the factors that makes Callaway Plantation unique is the fact that it has been in the control of the same family since the arrival of settlers in the late 18th century. It has passed from one generation to another by inheritance and the family still owns all of the land that surrounds the 56 acre core that was donated to the city of Washington, Georgia.
This beautiful plantation is located about 5 miles West of the county seat of Wilkes County, Washington, Georgia. Take Highway 78 West from Washington, Georgia. The entrance is located across from the Washington-Wilkes Airport. This historic restoration is a project of the City of Washington.
The Plantation consists of three restored homes as well as the fields of the farm.
The oldest building is a hewn log cabin and is believed to have been the home of an early settler. It is a single room cabin with a fireplace for cooking and heating.
There is a 2 story home typical of the 1790 period
