Ware County GenWeb Project
Ware County, Georgia was the 60th Georgia county and was formed on December 15, 1824, when cut from a portion of Appling. Ware County was named for Georgia Senator Nicholas Ware 1769-1824.  Eventually, four additional counties were cut from portions of Ware County. With just over 900 square miles of land, Ware remains the largest county in Georgia.

  • Clinch County, was formed as the 94th Georgia county, on February 14, 1850 from portions of Ware and Lowndes Counties.
  • Coffee County was formed on February 9, 1854, as the 107th Georgia county from portions of Ware, Clinch, Irwin and Telfair Counties. 
  • Pierce County was formed as the 119th Georgia county on December 18, 1857 from portions of Appling and Ware Counties. 
  • Bacon County was formed as the 149th Georgia county on July 27, 1917 from portions of Ware, Pierce and Appling Counties.

The County Seat for Ware County, Georgia is Waycross. Though once known as Tebeauville. The name Waycross came into being because of the importance of the railroad in the area. A main junction is located in Waycross, CSX Transportation's "Rice Yard" is located here. Based on the US Postal Service's designation of mail delivery, the following cities are located in Ware County: (1)Manor, (2)Millwood, (3)Waresboro, & (4)Waycross, partially located in Ware and a portion in Pierce County, Georgia.

Ware County, Georgia has an E-mail Mail List, named GAWARE. You can access the  GAWARE Archives here or at the RootsWeb Mailing Lists Index site, you can scroll through and search or browse the many mail lists archived on Rootsweb.

In the "List" mode you will receive each individual message as it is posted to the GAWARE List. Some people find this is 'too much' mail, so there is also Digest mode. In the "Digest" mode, you will receive a digest of a number of messages sent together after a certain period of time. 
To subscribe in List Mode, send the single word "SUBSCRIBE", do not use the quotation marks when you subscribe, place the one word in the subject line and in the body of the message, to [email protected]

If you subscribe to both list modes, you will receive duplicates of all the messages. Some have inadvertently done this and were distressed to receive so much mail. GAWARE can be busy at times.
