JOSEPH HERNDON

 

Joseph Herndon was born in 1762, some records show Laurel Kentucky, others show Chatham County, North Carolina.

He died August 30, 1853 and is buried in the Herndon (AKA Annie Mary Cemetery) on State Hwy 11, between Monroe and Social Circle, Walton County, Georgia. 

He married in 1780, Chatham, North Carolina, Frances Sarah Stewart, born about 1770 in Laurel, Kentucky. I have been unable to find her date or place of death. 

Joseph and his family are residing in Walton County for the 1850 Census, his age is 86, his wife Frances age 80 and three children living at home, Levi, age 56, Lin, age 48 and James Burt, age 22.

According to his headstone, he served with the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. According to information from a story on ancestry.com, Joseph Herndon served as a Captain.  Records indicate he was involved in the Battle of King's Mountain, Oct 1780.  He was awarded land grants and pension for his service.
