JOHN GRESHAM, SR.

John Gresham, Sr. was born 20 March 1740 in Virginia. He married Sarah Lumpkin probably around 1767/68, exact date and
location of this marriage I was unable to find. At some point between before 1830, John has moved from Virginia to Georgia,
because, according to "Authentic List of all Land Lottery Grants Made to Veterans of the Revolutionary War by the State of Georgia", he was living in Oglethorpe County for the 1827 land lottery. The Land grand was awarded Feb 1, 1831. I do not know, at this point, for sure where this grant was located, probably Walton County, since that is where he was living for the 1830 census.
In the 1820 census for Oglethorpe County, Georgia, Lexington District is listed a John Gresham, head of household, age over 45 male white , one female white age 26 to 45, 7 male and 3 female slaves. I believe this is the John Gresham listed here.
The 1830 census for Walton County (no district shown) shows a John Gresham with one white male age 80 to 89, 25 slaves, and 7 free whites in the household. I believe this the John Gresham listed here.
John Gresham died 13 November 1831 and is buried in a small cemetery in the front yard of a home listed as house number 3220 on H. D. Atha Road in Walton County, Georgia.

From information contained in the "Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution" and copies of service records on line from fold 3, John enlisted on Feb 6, 1777 for a period of three years. According to these records, he served with the 1st Virginia State Regiment, and 1 and 10th Virginia Regiment , and 2nd Virginia Brigade and the 14th Continental Line.
