JOHN STROUD

JOHN STROUD

I have been unable to locate a grave site for a John Stroud in Walton County records; indeed, his name is not listed in the cemetery books for Walton County.  I located his name on Page 269, Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia, Volume III, Graves of Revolutionary Soldiers Located by the Georgia Society daughters of the American Revolution as being buried in Walton County.

I believe this is an error.  My guess, and it is only a guess, is that the John Stroud listed on page 269 of above reference is, in fact, buried in the Mars Hill Church Cemetery in Watkinsville, Oconee County, Georgia.

This John Stroud was born Jan 6, 1732 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and died June 25, 1803 in Clarke County, Georgia. (Source:  U.S. Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970).

He married Sarah Connelly in 1755 in South Carolina (source: South Carolina Marriages, 1641-1965)  They had nine children, Margaret, William, John, Betty, Hannah, Mary, Sarah,  James and Mark.

According to the Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia, page 162, John Stroud's grave was marked by the Georgia D.A.R.  He joined the Colonial Army in Pennsylvania, fought in the French and Indian Wars, served with the 1st North Carolina under Major John Ashe 1777-1779.  Moved to Burke County, Georgia then to Hancock County, Georgia then to Clark County, Georgia.

I can find no record of John Stroud ever living in Walton County, Georgia.
