Upson County Mortality Schedule, 1860 Census
1860 Mortality Schedule, User Notes
Persons included in the Mortality Schedule were intended to be "every person who died during the year ending 1st June, 1860, whose usual place of abode at the time of death was in this family."
All data, including abbreviations, have been transcribed exactly from the microfilmed original, with the following exceptions: Ditto marks (") and the abbreviation (Do.) have been replaced with the data that they refer to. This ensures that, if lines of this database are electronically extracted or resorted, the data will not be confused. Doubtful readings are shown with [?].
COLUMN NAMES that may need explanation:
#
The left-hand number column was added by me to show the order in which persons were listed in the original schedule. The numbers are inherent to my database only, and do not represent any numbers on the original schedule.
First Name/Last name
The original record does not separate first and last names. I have done so to facilitate electronic searching or sorting, by those who may desire to do so.
Age
Ages for infants under one year old were given as fractions (example: 3/12 means three months)
Color
W= White, B= Black, M= Mulatto
F/S
F= Free, S= Slave
M/W
M= Married, W= Widowed
*Note: Three slaves (Cynthia, Rochester, and Eliza) near the beginning of the Mortality Schedule were marked "M" for married, then the "M" was lined out. No further slaves were identifed as married or widowed. This apparently reflects the census-taker's decision not to recognize slave marriages for Census purposes.
The 1860 Upson County census was collected by Georgia Militia District. The data in the Mortality Schedule follows the same sequence as the Population Schedule, but without the benefit of recording household numbers. Occasionally, lines in the Mortality Schedule were omitted. I wondered whether these omissions were meant to mark the beginning of a new militia district, but comparison with the Population Schedule ruled out that explanation. I do not know the significance of these blank lines (or whether hey have any significance at all), but I have left them in my transcription.
I have elected not to sort in alphabetical order. Because the order of names in the Mortality Schedule follows the order in which households were visited in the Population Schedule, comparison of the order in which deceased persons were recorded can identify the households in which they died. Numerous households had the same surname. If the Mortality Schedule is sorted alphabetically, it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to associate a particular free dead person with the correct household. The slaves in the Mortality Schedule were listed by first name only, making family identification highly improbable from the start (although there is a theoretical chance to do this using proximity to owners, based on recorded sequence). Arranging slave names alphabetically would make identifying them absolutely impossible.
The Mortality Schedule included a "Remarks" section at the bottom of each page. The following remarks were included by the census-taker for Upson County:
"REMARKS: There has been no disease of a general character in this subdivision, Pneumonia & Typhoid Fever have been most [P?]revelant, Water pure, Oak, Hickory, Chestnut and Pine the chief Timber, some Flint Rock, though the larger portion granite, soil mixed a portion of the county stiff Red Clay the balance a [two illegible words] soil. disease prevailed the past season among the horned cattle mostly affecting the mouths, sometimes the feet, & again the whole body was diseased, spirits of turpentine or a solution of copper[?] used in the early stages of the disease was often successfully used as a wash for the diseased parts. Among the hogs the cholera was unusually fatal, many remedies were used but with little effect, some recovered under medicine & others without any in the early part of this year. Many hogs died with a swelling of the throat (like Quinsy) & generally proved fatal before any remedy could be applied, there are several springs in this county of Medicinal properties (not having been analyzed, I cannot give a description of their qualities[.] No Bills of Mortality are kept.
