Treutlen County got its territory from Emanuel and Montgomery counties
in 1917. historians speculate the region saw its earliest settlers
arrive in 1784. The county bears the name of John Adam Treutlen
who participated in the Provincial Congress of 1775 and served as
the state's first official governor. While visiting Orangeburg,
South Carolina, Treutlen was murdered, allegedly by Tories.
Soperton, the county seat, is named for a prominent local citizen, Mr. Benjamin Franklin Soperton (1856 - 1907) who founded the Southern Railway Mine and Milling Company and was instrumental in the construction of the railroad.
