Thomas County was named for General Jett Thomas (1776-1817) who oversaw the construction of the first building at the University of Georgia as well as the state Capitol at Milledgeville. He went on to become a hero in the War of 1812.
The courthouse was damaged by a storm in 1849.
Thomas County was created from Decatur and Irwin Counties on 23 Dec 1825. Portions of Thomas County were later used to form Colquitt County, Brooks County and Grady County. |
