Telfair
County was organized from Wilkinson County in 1807. Its
county seat is McRae although Jacksonville served as its
first seat of government. Marriage records date to 1810;
land records to 1809; probate records to 1831; and court
records to 1810. The county was named for Edward Telfair
(1735-1807) who served as governor of the state.
Telfair
County once included portions of present-day Laurens, Wheeler,
Dodge, Coffee, and Jeff Davis Counties.
