Georgia History
Taliaferro County was created from Greene, Hancock, Oglethorpe, Warren, and Wilkes Counties in 1825. The county was named for Revolutionary War General Benjamin Taliaferro of Virginia. The county seat is Crawfordville.
The Militia Districts in Taliaferro County are all numbered consecutively 601, 602, etc., except for 172.
Because Taliaferro County was formed from several counties and in most cases the militia districts were split, leaving part of the old district in the parent county, it would have been a problem to use the former numbers. Because of this, the 600 series numbers were assigned by the Adjutant General when the county was created in 1825.
But what about the 172nd GMD? It was taken out of Wilkes in 1835 as a complete unit, so that number was retained.
Researchers should note that persons subject to taxation appearing in the 172nd GMD for the first time in 1836 were probably residents of Wilkes County prior the formation of the new county. Conversely, persons in the 172nd GMD of Wilkes County in 1835 will probably be found in Taliaferro County in 1836 and later years.
