Smith, Margaret Elizabeth Williams |
Margaret Elizabeth Williams Smith was born on 22 Sep 1844 in Screven Co. and died on 16 Nov 1918 at Johnson Corner, Toombs Co. She was the daughter of William Williams and Abigail Pye Williams. Margaret married Miles Smith in Screven Co. on 26 Apr 1862. Miles was the son of Archibald Smith (born ca. 1802 in N.C.? and died in Oct 1860 in Screven Co.) and Merincey Ann "Rintha" Roberts Smith (born in Screven Co. ca. 1809, died in Screven Co. in Dec 1879). Miles and Margaret moved to Bulloch Co. in about 1897 and to the English Eddy area of Tattnall Co. in about 1900 (this part of Tattnall became part of Toombs Co. when it was formed in 1905). Sometime after Miles died in 1902, Margaret moved to the Johnson Corner area. |

Smith, Miles |
Miles Smith, who was born on 22 January 1838 and died on 1 April 1902, according to his tombstone. I have also seen 1901 as his year of death, which makes me think the tombstone wasn't ordered until years after his death and the year of his death might be off a year. Miles was born in Screven County, the son of Archibald Smith (born in N.C.? ca. 1802 and died in Screven Co. in Oct. 1860) and Merincey Ann ("Rintha") Roberts Smith (born in Screven Co. ca. 1809, died in Screven Co. in Dec 1879). Miles married Margaret Elizabeth Williams, daughter of William Williams and Abigail Pye Williams in Screven Co. on 26 April 1862. They were married by Thomas B. Lanier, a Methodist minister. Miles and Margaret moved to Bulloch Co. in about 1897, and from there moved to the English Eddy area of Tattnall Co. (this area became part of Toombs Co. when it was created in 1905). Miles was buried about one mile from the Altamaha River. His gravesite fell into disrepair and his tombstone was moved in the early 1970s and placed alongside the grave of his wife Margaret (then unmarked) at Edmond Chapel Church of God at Johnson Corner, Toombs Co. This Church had been an Advent Church (offshoot of the Methodist Church) down into about the 1950s. Miles served in the Civil War primarily in Co. D, 47th Ga. Infantry. He and Margaret had several children to include William Miles, Robert Archie, Abigail, Dilly, Nancy and Lula, most of which wound up in what became Toombs Co. between about 1900-1905. |
