Mr. P.Z. Hill Crosses the Great Divide

Mr. P.Z. Hill, 78 years old, well-known Confederate Veteran and prominent citizen, passed away at his home here late Tuesday after an attack of pneumonia lasting less than one week.

The great heart of Ellaville and Schley County swells with grief over the loss of this great and good citizen, the profound influence of whose character and ideals has been interwoven with the finet traditions of the Old South and his city, county and state.

Although the writer had only known Mr. Hill for a short time, we loved him.  His life has been a towering pillar of love and loyalty to God, his fellow man and his country.  Its influence will endure in the memories of hosts of people as a precious monument to the golden harvest of honor and affection which he reaped in the broad fields of associations and public service which were his.

Mr. Hill was a member of Sumter Camp No. 642, U.C.V. and during the war between the states was a member of Company B, 64th Georgia Regiment Infantry.  He was one of those going to the reunion in New Orleans about three weeks ago with his comrades from Schley and Sumter counties.

Mr. Hill was a native of Taylor county, having been born there in 1844.  In 1864, fifty-nine years ago, he married Miss Lucy Duncan of Taylor County.  Twenty-four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Hill moved to Ellaville, where they have since resided.

Mr. Hill was a member of the Batist church and was highly respected for his many noble traits of character.  Possessing a genial disposition, he had many friends here and elsewhere who will learn with sorrow of his death.  Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, Rev. H.J. Johnston officiating, with interment in the local cemetery.

Mr. Hill is survived by his widow;  four daughters, Mrs. S.A. McMahan, Mrs. T.O. Turner and Mrs. L.B. Gardner of Oglethorpe, and Miss Carrie Hill of Ellaville;  four sons, Messrs. G(eorge) A(archibald) Hill of Sylvester;  Hinton Hill and Gordon Hill of Richmond Calif., and A(rthur) C(happel) Hill.  One brother, Mr. Si(Josiah) Hill of Shingler, and two sisters,  Mrs. Lizzie Hill and Mrs. Brewer of Macon County survive him, besides a nephew, Mr. Arthur Hill of Ellaville, and a number of grandchildren.---Harris Hill [email protected]
