Notes

Robert Burton

From "The History of Sumter County"........
Robert Burton, Jr. came from Effingham County, Ga., in the latter part of the 1830's. He took up a land grant in the Seventh District of Lee County, which is now Schley County. This grant was part of the Indian grant of 1825 which had been awarded to his grandmother, Elizabeth Denmark of the Tenth District of Effingham County, Ga.

He was born in Effingham County on June 4, 1820. He married Martha Ashurst Wilkinson of Talbotton, Ga., on 12 Dec 1842 by Thomas Sanford, MG. He was privately educated and known as a cultured gentleman-farmer. He was a Captain in the Confederacy and represented Schley County in the Georgia Legislature where he helped get a railroad in Schley County. He was fond of the theatre and often took his family to Macon for events.

Some of the old timers used to say that Mrs. Burton was a very positive woman and that she even liked to drive her carriage in white gloves from Ellaville to Americus! When her husband was stationed at Pensacola during the Civil War, she left her children with trusted slaves and family and went with him. She died in Ellaville on May 15, 1894. Robert moved to Americus, living with his daughters, Mrs. John Newton Scarborough and Mrs. Charles Frederick Crisp, who lived next door to each other on Taylor street in Americus.

Robert Burton died on July 27, 1897 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Scarborough. His body was taken by train with an escort to Ellaville City Cemetery where he is buried beside his wife.

The following was taken from Ellaville and Schley
County......an historical sketch, published by the
Heritage Committee, Schley County Bicentennial
Commission.

" A centrally located site was chosen as the county seat
and Ellaville was born.  Land for the town was sold to
the county by Robert Burton;  incorporation took place in
November of 1859, and the name Ellaville was chosen in
honor of Ella Burton, Robert's 11 year old daughter."

She is E.L., age 13 in the 1860 census below.  He was
married to Martha A. Wilkerson. There is a picture of a
painting of the very elaborate residence of Robert Burton
ca. 1857 and a photograph of it in 1976(then home of Mrs.
Annie Hart).

Again from the above noted publication....

"According to one account, support for the war effort in
Schley was rampant.  Ninety-three men volunteered for the
Schley Guards which was later formed by Robert Burton in
May, Burton being elected Captain."

Robert Burton was a Mason and in fact was one of the
officers of Washington Lodge No. 46, established in 1846
according to The History of Schley County compiled by the
Schley County Preservation Society.

Burton, Robert-Captain May  11, 1861. Appears last on roll
for July 1, 1861. Resigned in 1861.

Burton, Homer W.-Musician May 11, 1861. Transferred to Co. H, April 18, 1862 ; to Co. A, 2d Battn. Ga. Sharpshooters July 1862. Sick in hospital April 30, 1864. No later record. Homer was the son of Captain Robert Burton. Census records indicate that he was born in about 1844. He enlisted as the company musician at approximate age 17.
From "The History of Sumter County," "All three of the Burton children were privately educated by a governess who lived in their home. All three were musicians. Homer was a fine flutist and the girls were trained in piano, guitar and voice. They were sent to Weslyan College, as was an orphaned cousin, daughter of their Uncle Benjamin Burton."
County records indicate that he married Clifford H. Tison on 18 Jul 1865 in Schley County. They had no children.
Homer was appointed Ellaville Postmaster on March 1, 1871 and he served until May 22, 1876.
There is evidence that Homer Burton was a merchant. From The Schley County Enterprise, Oct. 3, 1889, "Workman began this week to erect a neat little building between Peacock and Arrington's and Homer Burton's store. It will be occupied by the Post Office when completed."

Putnam Stephens

Putnam Sparks Stevens was probably there visiting his brother, Jasper Hampton Stevens, 1st Sergeant.
Putnam Sparks Stevens is buried in Stevens-Munro cemetery in Putnam GA b. 1836 d. 1918, Co. D, 29th Ga. Cav., CSA. He married Josephine Louisa Hurt 19 Oct. 1857.
His brother was Jasper Hampton Stevens, born 07 June 1831 in Harris Co., Ga., and died 21 Jan 1898 in Putnam, GA. He married Cordelia Hurt 20 Apr 1858 and he enlisted in Co. G, 5th Ga. Inf. in Schley Co. on 11 May 1861.

Putnam GA was named for him because there was a railroad stop at his home, the former "Peachtree Plantation".

Ellaville was saddened last Saturday by the announcement of the death of Mr. P. H. Stevens of Putnam. Mr. Stevens was more than eighty years old, and was well and favorably known to all of our citizens. He had always taken an active interest in religious matters and stood for all that helped to make the world better. He is survived by his aged wife and a large number of children and grandchildren. His remains were interred at Putnam Sunday afternoon, Rev. R. M. Rustin officiating.

MR. E.L. STEPHENS DEAD
The sad intelligence was received here last Friday, announcing the death of Mr.
E.L. Stephens which occurred at Richland, Ga. on that day.  Mr. Stephens had
been a sufferer from Bright's disease for several months, and while every possible
medical aid was rendered, all proved fruitless.  He was a son of our esteemed
neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. P.S. Stephens of Putnam, Ga., at which place he was
born and reared.  Mr. Stephens, shortly after reaching the age of twenty one
removed to Richland, where he read and was admitted the practice of law.  After
following his profession, at that place for several years, he came to Ellaville in
1899, and  engaged in a very successfull mechantile business for a couple of
years.  While here, he was married to Miss Nicholson of Richland.  In 190, he
moved back to Richland and engaged in the merchantile business at that place,
also, was a solicitor of the county court of Stewart county.  Mr. Stephens was only
30 years of age, and the future held for him the brightest prospect, both, in the
professional and commercial world.  Funeral services and his burial took place,
at Richland, Saturday afternoon at 4:30 pm.

Schley County News Aug 19th 1910

Death of Dr. Bivins
After an illness of several weeks Dr. R.T. Bivins died at his home in this county on last Monday morning. For the past two years the Doctor had rapidly failed in health, suffering from an attack of dropsy, though up to that time he was a remarkably preserved man for his age. He was just entering his seventy second year at the time of his death.

Thus Dr. Bivins, there was no more widely known man thru this section, Born and reared in this county and having lived here all of his life, he was thouroughly identified with every period of interest contained its past history. For more than forty years he had faithfully followed his chosen profession, at all times ever ready to respond ot the call of the suffering and in this particular he doubless did more chartiable practice than any man of his age. As a physician the Dr. was reckoned as one of the best in the country; as a citizen , he was appreciated by all for his intellectual worth; as a soldier throughout the civil war, he was held in the highest esteem of his comrades, and as a father and husband he was beloved by a large family. The burial services were conducted at the Ellaville cemetery Tuesday morning, by Rev. O.L. Peacock, a large assembly of friends beign present, thereby attesting heir appreciation for their departed friend. Schley Co. News A Card of Thanks

We here wish to extend our most sincere thanks to the good people of our neighborhood and to Dr. Bridges, attending physician, for their many acts of kindness and thoughtful deeds administered during the recent illness and death of our beloved one, Dr. R.T. Bivins. Let all feel assured that such friendship as was exemplified will ever be appreciated by us.
Sincerely, Mrs. R.T. Bivins and family
