Charles James Adkison, the infant son of Tina Adkison, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 1997. Infant Adkison was born Nov. 17, 1997 in Rome. Survivors include: brother, Brian Smith of Rockmart; grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Quincy Gilmore of Rockmart; and great grandmother, Dovie Crews of Cartersville. Graveside services were held Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m., in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Bartow County, with Rev. Carl Robinson officiating. The Freeman Harris Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Imogene Hardin Allen, 58, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997 after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by: her parents Benton James and Thelmla Shiflett Hardin; sister, Fay Garret; and three brothers, C. J. Hardin, Wendell Hardin, and Robert Hardin. Survivors include: former husband, Tommy Allen; four daughters, Deborah Davis, Melinda Sanchez, Diane Noble, and Tina Ellison; three sons, Timothy L. Allen, Mitchell Allen, James Allen; two sisters, Sally Norton and Lavonne Searles; brother Jerry Hardin; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m., from the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with Rev. James Brewer officiating. The interment followed at the Pleasant Hope Baptist Church. Pallbearers included: Rodney Hardin, David Searles, Rickey Garrett, Robbie Hardin, Kenny Hardin, Harold Hardin, Jerry Boling, Randy Boling, Chris Hardin and Anthony Hardin. Johnny Arrington, 78, of Rome passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997 at Floyd Medical Center. Mr. Arrington was born Dec. 10, 1918 in Cherokee County, Ala.. He was a self-employed carpenter and of the Baptist faith. Surviving are: wife, Lucille G. Arrington of Rome; three daughters, Sandra Towe of Rome, Teresa Evans of Cedartown and Lucinda Arrington Balderas of Kennesaw; three sons Larry Arrington and Mark Arrington, both of Rome, and John Arrington of Cedartown; three sisters, Katie Haralson and Jewell Tuck, both of Cedartown, and Edna Dempsey of Taylorsville; brother, Homer Arrington of Cedartown; 18 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 10, at 2. p.m., from the West Oak Chapel Funeral Home of Rome, with Rev. J.R. Sharp officiating. Interment followed in Arrington,s Chapel Cemetery, Piedmont, Ala.. Pallbearers were: Ricky LeCroy, Josh Huie, Darron Stowe, Tori Stowe, Trevor Evans, Rodney Towe, Gary Towe, Jr. and John Arrington, Jr.. Evelyn C. Atkins, age 76, passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 1997. Mrs. Atkins was born May 17, 1921 in Polk County. She was a retired employee of the Runell Manufacturing Company and a member of the Rockmart Second Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer John and Ida Virginia Ingram Coalson; and husband, Henry L. Atkins. Surviving are: two daughters, Eloise Fuqua of Rockmart and Elaine Casey of Cedartown; two sisters, Ava Nell Robinson of Rockmart and Doris Braswell of Bremen; brother, Earl Coalson of Dallas; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of the Avis Miller and Son Funeral with Rev. Calvin Brown and Dr. Benjamin Lindsay officiating. Interment followed in Rose Hill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were; J. R. Cole, Maniey Casey, Thurman Atkins, Pershing Wadsworth, Franklin Statham and Bill Gates. Alma Lee Austin, 74, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 1997. Mrs. Austin was born July 1, 1923 in Polk County. She was a member of Friendly Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Merrick and Bertha Mae Witcher Coleman. Surviving are: husband William O. Austin, Jr., of Cedartown: three daughters Linda Slafta of Lawrenceville, Gail Bailey and Melissa Johnson, both of Cedartown; son, William Austin of Akin, S.C.; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 3, at 2 p.m., from the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with the Rev. R.B. Hulsey, Dr. Larry Conner and the Rev. Clay Willis officiating. Interment followed in Northview Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were: William Mobley, Mack Moore, Lonnie Nails, David Hudgins, Robert Hulsey, and Jeff Hulsey. Buford Ayers, 86, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 1997. Mr. Ayers was born Aug. 24, 1911 in Haralson County. He was of the Baptist faith. A number of cousins survive. Graveside services were held Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m., in the Bethlehem Cemetery of Felton, with the Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating. The Lester C. Mrs. Elizabeth Morgan Boyd Bagby, age 80, of Smyrna, GA., passed away Tuesday, December 30, 1997. Mrs. Bagby was born November 23, 1917 in Gadsden, Ala., and was a member of The Anna Kresge United Methodist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Martha Gail Stewart of Smyrna; three brothers, William (Bill) Cheatwood, Jr. of Cedartown, John Cheatwood of Hokesbluff, Ala., and Jeff Cheatwood, Gadsden, Ala.; two sisters, Jane Cheatham of Selma, Ala., and Mary Wood of Hokesbluff, Ala.; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 3, 1998 at 11 a.m., at Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Arnold officiating. Interment followed in Polk Memory Gardens Cemetery. Susie Nettles Baldwin, 84, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997 at her residence. Mrs. Baldwin was born Feb. 15, 1913 in Rockmart. She was a member of the Morning View Baptist Church, a former Goodyear employee and a retired Aragon Mill employee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Clyde Baldwin, Sr.. Surviving are: Clyde Baldwin, Jr., of Rockmart; two brothers, Raymond Nettles and James Nettles, both of Rockmart; sister, Eula V. Williams of Cedartown; and a granddaughter. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m., from the Freeman Harris Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Lawrence Garrett and Rev. Talmadge Pope officiating. Interment followed in Polk Memory Gardens. Serving as pallbearers were: Edward Nettles, Pierce Nettles, Dustin Lindsey, Brad Garrett, Richard Nettles and Ray Nettles. W.O. "Dub" Barrow, 76, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997 at his residence. Mr. Barrow was born March 1, 1921 in Bowdon. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rockmart and the Rockmart American Legion Post No. 12; former owner and operator of the Guy Sloan Motor Company; and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II. He is preceded in death by his parents, W.O. and Alice Walker Barrow. Survivors include: wife, Eloise Barrow of Rockmart; son, William Lee Barrow of Houston, Texas; brother, Jack Barrow of Rockmart; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 11, at 4, p.m., from the Rockmart First Baptist Church, with Rev. David Taylor officiating. Interment followed in Rose Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Bill Carlton, Bill Carmichael, Guy Atkins, Any Elrod, Rae Herndon, T.A. Willingham, and W. J. Wiggins. Joseph David Bassett, 70, of Taylorsville, passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997 at his residence. Mr. Bassett was born Jan. 29, 1927 in Asheville, N.C.. He was a retired construction worker and a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II. Survivors include: two brothers, Pete Bassett of Asheville, N.C., and Bill Bassett of Taylorsville; and three sisters, Jessie Sparks, Barbara Bassett and Sherry Bassett, all of Asheville, N.C.. Graveside services were held Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Riverside Cemetery in Asheville, N.C., with Major Leonard Taylor officiating. The Freeman Harris Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Nicholas A. Bechler, age 79, passed away Sunday, December 14, 1997 at the VA Medical Center Nursing Home in Miami, Florida. Mr. Bechler was born February 8, 1918, in Romania. He was a retired employee of the Union Carbide Chemicals. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Bechler. Survivors include son, David Bechler, Pembroke Pines, Fla., daughter, Ruth Phillips, Cedartown, brother, John Bechler, Somerset, N.J., sister Helen Woisznies, Somerset, N.J., and 4 grandchildren. Memorial services were held Friday, December 19, 1997 at 7;00 P.M., AT Kingdom Hall of Jehovah,s Witnesses, Cedartown with Roger Hiltbrand officiating. Clarence Wallace Becknell, 77, passed away Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997 following a sudden illness. Mr. Becknell was born July 14, 1920. He was a member of East Rome Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II, and a former employee of Lindale Mills. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Evelyn Case Becknell. Survivors include: son, Randy Becknell of Rockmart; three brothers, Hubert Cline, Gene Cline, and Artie Cline, all of Rome; three grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of the Daniel,s Funeral Home, with the Rev. Glen Boatner and the Rev. Jerry Nelson officiating. James Pinson "Jim" Bennett, 86, of Oxford, Ala., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997 at his residence. Mr. Bennett was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are: wife, Ellen Bennett of Oxford: daughter, Mary Jim Harper of Reform, Ala.; sister, Annie Tom Hightower of Eufaula, Ala.; two grandchildren and a great grandchild. Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m., at the Miller Funeral Home, with Ron Ethridge officiating. Interment followed in the Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery of Anniston, Ala.. Serving as pallbearers were: Morris Phillips, Tom Vaughn, Winston Bentley, Dewey Hughes, William Henry Cooper and Larry Hicks. Honorary pallbearers included: Rick Brown, E.F. Mrs. Vera Hooper Bowen, age 92 of Dallas, GA. passed away Monday, December 29, 1997 in the Paulding County Nursing Home. Mrs. Bowen was born January 12, 1905, in Coweta County. She was a former Goodyear employee, homemaker, and a member of Beulahland Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Hill Bowen and parents, James C. and Elmira Pendergrass Hooper. Survivors include her son Bobby Bowen, Dallas; brother, Gilbert M. Hooper, Rome, one grandson, two great grandchildren, and one great great grandson. The funeral service was held Thursday, January 1, 1998 at 2 p.m., from the Freeman Harris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. T. Hollingshed officiating. Interment followed in Rose Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Donald Hooper, Roy Bradley, Loyd Locklear, Steve Goldin, Ricky Bradley, and Harvey Hooper. Honorary pallbearer was Ed Cole. Mrs. Marie Oliver Swicke Bridges, age 87, passed away Saturday, December 20, 1997. She was born October 7, 1910 in Haralson County. She retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. She was a member of Lee,s Chapel Baptist Church and a member of the Eastern Star and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include daughters, Francis Robinson Lennon, MI, Glenda Nettles, Rockmart, sons, Cecil Oliver, Nelson Oliver, Seals Oliver, Cedartown, 23 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Bridges were held Tuesday, December 23, 1997 at 11;00 a.m., from the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with Rev. Clifford Chandler, Rev. Hugh Dorsey Welchel and Rev. Clyde Saddler officiating. Interment followed in Northview Cemetery. The family received friends Monday, December 22, 1997 from 7 until 9 p.m., at the funeral. Ettie Mae Brown, 99, passed away Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997. Mrs. Brown was born Oct. 17, 1898 in Paulding County. She was a former Goodyear employee and a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by; her husband, Charles T. Brown; son, Charles E. Brown and daughter, Hazel Cash. Surviving are: son, Horace E. Brown of Jonesboro; four daughters, Lois Owens of Smyrna, Ethel Strickland of Union City, Mary White of Rockmart, and Gussie Childers of Douglasville; two sisters Mary Ella Wheeler and Frances White, both of Rockmart; 15 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m., from the Freeman Harris Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Ray Hopkins officiating. Interment followed in New Prospect Cemetery. Herman L. "Freck" Brumbelow, 82, passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 1997. Mr. Brumbelow was born Dec. 28, 1914 in Aragon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps having served during World War II, a member of Antioch Baptist Church, and a retired Rockmart Postal Service Employee. He was preceded in death by a son, David Brumbelow. Surviving are: wife, Edna Jackson Brumbelow of Rockmart; two sons, Jack Brumbelow of Dallas, Texas, and Mitchell Brumbelow of Rockmart; daughter, Leann Brumbelow Kling of Woodstock; brother, J. K. Brumbelow of Smyrna; and two grandsons. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m., in the Aragon Baptist Church, with Rev. Ronnie Puckett officiating. Johnny B. Brumit, 53, passed away Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997. Mr. Brumit was born June 30, 1944 in Polk County. He was a member of the Cedartown church of Christ. Surviving are: mother, Hazel L. Brumit of Cedartown; daughter, Michelle Downey of Cedartown; sister Joan Smith of Cedartown; and two grandsons. Graveside services were held Friday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m., in the Polk Memory Gardens, with Minister Dub McCoy and Minister Jim Gillespie. The Lester C. Calvin Z. "Red" Cain, 70, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997. Mr. Cain was born May 13, 1927 in Floyd County. He was a member of the Pine Bower Baptist Church, the Cedartown Chamber of Commerce, and the Polk County Civil Defense; a veteran of World War II; and manager owner of the Valley Grain Company for 43 years. Surviving are: his wife, Maggie Jeanette Baker Cain of Cedartown; two sons, Stanley Calvin Cain of Rome and David Danville Cain of Cedartown; daughter, Susan Carrol Jones of Cedartown; brother, Claude Cain of Lindale; sister, Margaret Turner of Rome; six grandchildren; a great grandchild and two step grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m., in the Pine Bower Baptist Church with Rev. R.B. Hulsey, Rev. Charles Garner, and Rev. Robert Wright officiating. Ella Mae Lyles Carroll, 76, of Warner Robins, passed away Saturday, July 5, 1997. Mrs. Carroll was born June 7, 1921 in Macon. She was a member of the Glad Tidings Tabernacle of Macon and the Bibb Company Women,s Club, and a sales clerk at K-Mart. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otha L. and Florie Talmus Lyles, and husband James Howard Carroll. Surviving are: four daughters, Mary B. Callins and Jeannie B. Murphy, both of Warner Robins, Elizabeth B. Newman of Roberta and Frankie B. Bass of Macon: two sisters, Betty L. Pipkin and Matile L. Kitchens, both of Macon; two brothers William Lyles of Macon and Malcolm Lyles of Glenwood; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, July 7, at 11 a.m., in the McCullough Funeral Home, Warner Robins, with the Rev. Sydney Odom and the Rev. Linda Gayle Thompson officiating. Mr. Irvin Samuel "Irv" Cauthen, age 71, passed away Sunday, December 7, 1997 in an out of town hospital. He was born January 21, 1926 in Haralson County. He was a retired Fork Lift Operator with General Electric and an Army Veteran. Preceded in death by parents Vassie Viola Batchleor Cauthen and Arthur S. Cauthen. Survivors include: wife Annie Lee Cauthen of Cedartown, GA., daughter Melva Stewart, brother Gene Cauthen, grandchildren Lisa Stewart and Chad Stewart. Funeral services for Mr. Cauthen were held Wednesday, December 10, 1997 at 2:00 p.m., at the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with Rev. Bud Davis and Dr. Larry Davis officiating. The interment followed in Polk Memory Gardens. The family received friends Tuesday December 9, 1997 from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Willie Mae Waldrop Chapman, 77, of Rockmart, passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 1997. Mrs. Chapman was born Jan. 27, 1920 in Haralson County. She was a member of the Youngs Grove Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by: her husbands Donald Waldrop and Clarence Chapman; parents, Benjamin and Maggie Martin Chupp; and son, Henry Waldrop. Surviving are: son, Roger Waldrop of Rockmart; daughter, Patricia Waldrop Dyer of Rockmart; brother, Colie Chupp of Silver Creek; three sisters, Mary Scroggs and Vastie Lewis, both of Rockmart, and Marie Weaver of Cedartown; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 12, at 3 p.m., from the Piedmont Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert Wright and the Rev. Bobby Woods officiating. Interment followed in Rose Hill Cemetery. She was a member of Euharlee Baptist Church and an employee of Dunn Quick Stop. She was preceded in death by a son, William Owen Clinton. Surviving are: husband, Junior L. Clinton of Aragon; two daughters, Beverly Clinton and Reba Faye Waters, both of Aragon; two brothers Floyd Morris and Raiford Morris, both of Aragon; two sisters, Coraline Thompson and Georgetta Morris, both of Buchanan; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m., from the Freeman Harris Funeral Home, with Rev. Jim Moon and Rev. Charles Cornwell officiating. Interment followed in Aragon Cemetery. Surviving are: wife, Irene Hutcheson Coalson of Rockmart; son, Keith Coalson of Rockmart; two daughters, Brenda McClain of Rockmart and Marilyn Taylor of Hagerstown, Md.; two brothers, Byron Coalson and Wayne Coalson, both of Rockmart; two sisters, Mildred Hulsey of Dallas and Edna Miller of Rockmart; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 1, at 2:30 p.m., from the Calvary Baptist Church, with Dr. Richard Smith, Rev. Charles Williams and Dr. Barry Keaton officiating. Mr. Johnny Vester (Pete) Coker, 83, of Dallas, died Thurs., Dec. 11, 1997, in the Dallas Hospital. He was born June 28, 1914, in Polk County, GA.. He was a retired textile employee and a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Felton and Emma Moody Coker. Bertha Lee Washburn Compton, 85, of Rome passed away Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997. Mrs. Compton was born March 29, 1912 in Cherokee County, Ala. She was a member of the Garden Lakes Baptist Church of Rome and a former, hostess-student nurse at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Alec Washburn, and a grandson. Surviving are: three daughters, Mrs. Jimmy Langley of Cedartown, Margaret W. Andrews of Silver Creek and Betty Ann Powell of Waleska; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Mrs. Pauline Mabel Banner Conda, 85, of Rockmart, passed away Friday, January 2, 1998, in a Rome Nursing Home. She was born May 19, 1912, in Avery County, N.C. She was a retired school teacher and a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of the Grey Ladies Women,s Club, and the Rockmart First United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Patience Hubbard Circle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dominick Georgia Conda; and parents, John Lewis and Minnie Barrett Banner. Survivors include her daughter, Miss Christina Jane Conda, Rockmart. Willie Floyd Couzzort, Jr., 53, passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997 following an extended illness. Mr. Couzzort was born Aug. 17, 1944 in Polk County. She was a homemaker and a member of Taylorsville Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Jeff C. Crumley and parents Newt and Fannie Popham Roberson. James Whitson Davis, 71, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997 at his residence. Mr. Davis was born July 12, 1926 in Polk County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired planner supervisor with Lockheed Aircraft. He was preceded in death by a grandson. Evelyn Kines Denton, 79, of Rome, formerly of Cedartown, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997. Mrs. Denton was born May 3, 1918 in Rock Run, Ala.. She was a member of the Second Avenue Baptist Church of Rome and a former member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church for 60 years where she served as WMU president. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Denton, a sister, Bonnie Kines Gibbs, and a brother, Rev. Grady Kines. Surviving are: son, Andrew Denton, Jr., Vickie Denton Busbin of Rome; sister, Bertie Kines Sharp of Cedartown; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Floyd Dorsey. A nephew, who is also a foster son, Jack George of Cedartown survives. Mr. B. Paul Grimes, age 77, of Cedartown, passed away Saturday, December 27, 1997 in a local hospital. Mr. Grimes was born August 13, 1920 in Haralson County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Ewell Carr Sunday School Class. He was the owner and operator of Grimes Plumbing and Heating and was the manager of the Cedartown Water Authority. He was also a member of the Lions Club, the Caledonia Lodge #1221, and the Yaarab Temple. Survivors include three sisters, Travis Grimes Haney, Alta Lee Grimes Lovegren, and Jimmie Grimes Haney, all of Cedartown; and a number of nieces and nephews. Martha Alma Feaster Hicks, 86, passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997. Mrs. Hicks was born Sept. 8, 1911 in Chattanooga, Tenn.. She was a charter member of the Polk County Historical Society, and a member of the First United Methodist Church and Daffodil Garden Club. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. James Floyd Hill, Jr., 68, passed away Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997. Mr. Hill was born May 14, 1929 in Polk County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a retired General Motors employee. Odie A. Holden, 76, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997 in a Rome hospital. Mrs. Holden was born June 27, 1921 in Paulding County. J. Porter Jacobs, 89 , of Rockmart, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997. Mr. Jacobs was born July 24, 1908 in Bartow County. He was a retired Goodyear supervisor with 40 years of service, a Polk County School District employee, a deacon of the Rockmart First Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers having served during World War II, and a member of the Rockmart American Legion Post No. 12. He was preceded in death by sisters, Effie Gober, Lula Dunaway and Mable East. Surviving are: wife Estelle Williams Jacobs of Rockmart; daughter, Charlotte Vogel of Douglasville; two brothers Clyde Jacobs of Riverdale and Rufus Jacobs of Smyrna; sister, Hazel Baldwin of Rockmart; three grandchildren and a great grandson. Forrest Johnson, 86, of Buchanan passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997. Mr. Johnson was born March 25, 1911 in Cherokee County, Ala.. He was a retired farmer and member of Crossroads Baptist Church. Mr. Arthur Shamblin Jones, age 87, passed away December 30, 1997. Mr. Jones was born June 15, 1910 in Bluffton, Ala., but raised in Rome. He retired from the U. S. Civil Service in 1978 as Comptroller of the Language School at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Columbus, and was a Mason. He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas L. Jones and Alpha Billingsley; and wife, Ruth Hamrick Jones. Robert Allen Kellett, 68, of Union, S. C., formerly of Aragon, passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 1997 in Spartanburg, S.C.. Mr. Kellett was born Feb. 3, 1929 in Summerville. He was a retired vice president with the United Merchants Manufacturing in Buffalo, S.C., a deacon of the Fairforest Baptist Church in Union, S.C., and a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Annis Cochran Kellett. She was a retired insurance administrator with Dr. C. M. Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobart Kinney, Jr.; and parents, James Martin and Frances Emma Kirk Davenport. Ruby Catherine Williams Lockridge, 82, passed away Saturday Nov. 29, 1997. Mrs. Lockridge was born Feb. 6, 1915 in Rock Run, Ala.. She was a member of Kresge Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was in the Blue and Gold Club and the Women,s Society. Survivors include: husband, Sam M. Lockridge of Cedartown; three daughters, Reba Daly of Florence, S.C., Gayle Mercer of Atlanta, and Brenda Howard of Cochran; two brothers, Don Williams of Cedartown and Bob Williams of Cairo; three sisters, Agnes White, Myrtle Lockridge and Besulah Gilliam, all of Cedartown; 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Mr. Paul Lumpkin, age 89, of Rockmart, passed away Thursday, December 18, 1997, at his residence. He was born October 20, 1908 in Gordon County. Mr. Lumpkin was a retired Goodyear Employee with 44 years service, former self employed floor sander, and a member of the First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Georgia and Minnie Burns Lumpkin, brother, Edward H. Lumpkin, and sisters, Ida L. Chambers and Ethel L. Chambers. Survivors include wife, Mrs. Elsie Parham Lumpkin, Rockmart, daughter, Mrs. Johnnie Ashley, Rockmart, brother, Billy Lumpkin, Euharlee, Sister, Mrs. Laura Stephens, Draketown, 1 grandson and 1 granddaughter. Clara Floy Lyle, 87, passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 1997 following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Lyle was born Aug. 21, 1910 in Paulding County. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence Allen Lyle; a daughter, Janice Marie Lyle, and a son Larry Lyle. Surviving are: a daughter, Helen Williams of Atlanta; four sons, Bobby Lyle, Cecil Lyle, Bruce Lyle, all of Rockmart, and Herschel Lyle of Whitesburg; eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Jesse James Mann, 69, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 1997. Mr. Mann was born Nov. 18, 1927 in Polk County, He was a retired supervisor with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company with 47 years of Service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy R. and Grace Priest Mann. Survivors include: wife, Cecile G. Mr. Alvin "Son" Mayben, age 83, of Attalla, Alabama, passed away Friday, December 12, 1997. He was a life long resident of Etowah County, a Deacon and Charter member of Northside Baptist Church and Sunday School Secretary. He was a member of Local 57 Painters Union. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Mamie Mayben, brother, Elmus Mayben, Joe Mayben, and Hansel Mayben, sister, Rose L. Robertson. Patsy Echols McGehee, of Macon, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 1997. Mary Lee McKelvey, 83, of Rome passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997. Ms. McKelvey was born June 20, 1914 in Bartow County. She was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church of Rome, a retired supervisor from the Serimetrical Laboratories with the Calanese Corporation, and a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Mr. Marvin H. (Jack) Morgan, age 89, of Naples, Florida, formerly of Rockmart, passed away Friday, October 31, 1997, in Naples Florida. Mr. Morgan was born January 23, 1908, in Rockmart. He was a retired Swift & Company employee in Cincinnati, Ohio with 30 years service and a member of Naples First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Sally Hardin Norton, age 51, of Rockmart, died Sunday, December 14, 1997 in a Rome Medical Center following a lengthy illness. She was born in Polk County, on July 8, 1946, the daughter of the late Benton James Hardin and Thelma Shiflett Hardin. Mrs. Norton had lived her entire life in Polk County where she was a homemaker and a member of the Freedom Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Howard Norton, Jr., sister, Mrs. Imogene Allen and Mrs. Fay Garrett, and brothers, C.J. Hardin, Wendell Hardin, and Robert Hardin. Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Sharon Loyd, Rockmart, and Mrs. Kathy Dawson, Aragon, brother, Mr. Jerry Hardin, Cedartown and sister, Mrs. Lavonne Searls, Cedartown, and six grandchildren also survive. Mr. Frank George Overbey, age 68, of Cedartown, passed away Monday, March 2, 1998 at his residence. Mr. Overbey was born August 30, 1929. He was retired from Wright & Lopez as an area manager. After retirement he was a bus driver for the Head Start Program. He was a member of Friendly Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Hiram Overbey. Survivors include his wife, Mary S. He was a boiler operator for Ben Hill Griffin in Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ella Smith Riggins, and two sons, Wes Riggins and Walter Riggins. Floy Carter Sanders, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997. Mrs. Sanders was born Sept. 30, 1913 in Polk County. She was a member of Anna Kresge United Methodist Church. Mr. Leonard Ross Shackelford, Sr., 66, passed away Tues., December 08, 1997 in an out of town hospital. He was born August 7, 1931 in Polk County. He was employed by WGAA Radio, a member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church, Sunday School Teacher and Choir member. He retired from Engineered Fabrics in Rockmart, formerly Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., and winner of Goodyear Spirit Award in 1986. He was a veteran of the Korean War and former member of The American Legion and Exchange Club. He served on the Polk Co. Board of Education. He was former member of the Northwest Georgia Football Official Association and formerly active in the Cedartown Little Theater. He was active with the Goodyear Boy Scouts in Rockmart, and he was a volunteer for the American Heart Association, United Way and American Cancer Association. He was preceded in death by parents, Ruby Parker Shackelford and Charlie Shackelford. Survivors include: wife Catherine Colquitt Shackelford of Cedartown, daughter, Dell Copeland, Beth Branch, both of Cedartown, Leigh Burell, of Rockmart, son Leonard Ross Shackelford, Jr., of Knightdale, N.C., sister, Alice Stroup of Cedartown, brothers, Charles W. Margaret Hudgens Smith, 81, of Rome, passed away Sunday Nov. 16, 1997. Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 28, 1916 in Rossville. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rome. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ratio Fred Smith; daughter, Martha Robinson; and a sister Virginia Bovell. Surviving are: two sons, Fred T. Smith of Cedartown and Edd Smith of Acworth; sister, Helen Starnes of Rossville; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m., in the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Edens officiating. Interment followed in Polk Memory Gardens. Vennie Irene Smith, 87, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 1997. Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 1, 1909 in Bartow County. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church. Surviving are: three daughters, Linda Lavern Vinson, Charlene Guice, and Sonja Lea Bridges, all of Cedartown. Nine grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. Laura Aileen Graves Soules, 76, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997. Mrs. Soules was born Jan. 6, 1921 in Nacogdochee County, Texas. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, LaMerle Graves Aken, and a brother, Horacy B. Graves. Surviving are: husband, James T. Soules of Cedartown; son, James T. Soules, Jr., of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Lynn Soules Gondel of Charlotte, N. C., and Alicia Soules of Tucker; brother, John Graves of Amarillo, Texas; sister, Faye Hancock of Nacogdochee County, Texas; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Dorothy Mae Spinks, age 74, of Aragon, passed away Wednesday, December 31, 1997, at a Rome Hospital. Mrs. Spinks was born January 2, 1924, in Polk County and was a member of Piedmont Ave. Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh R. Spinks, parents, Emory Lee and Mamie Lee Brumbelow Suits, and daughter, Paulette Spinks. Survivors include, two sons Mr. Hugh Lamar Spinks, of Aragon, and Mr. Eddie Ragin Spinks, of Rockmart; a daughter, Mrs. Jane Jones of Aragon; a brother Mr. Paul Suit of Davenport, Fla.; three sisters. Mrs. Renie Blackmon, of Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Ruth Harris, of Taylorsville; and Mrs. Odell Statham of Stockbridge; 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Elbert Lee Stephens, 73, passed away Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997. Mr. Stephens was born April 23, 1924 in Cullman, Ala. He was a member of Pine Bower Baptist Church. Ocie Bell Rhinehart Stephens, 85, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997. Mrs. Stephens was born Jan. 21, 1912 in Alabama. She was a retired spinner of 27 years with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and a member of Sardis Southern Congregational Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy E. Stephens, Sr.. Mrs. Betty A. McDonald Strickland, age 67, of Cedartown passed away Monday, February 16, 1998. Mrs. Strickland was born August 12, 1930 in Karo, Ga. She was a member of the Youngs Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Van Lawrence Strickland. Survivors include a son, Charles Strickland of Cedartown and a brother Billy McDonald of Plaino, TX. E. D. Strickland, 84, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 1997 at his residence. Mr. Strickland was born Sept. 30, 1913 in Polk county. He was preceded in death by his wife Julie Mae Bridges Strickland, and parents, Will and Hattie Parrish Strickland, Sr.. Surviving are: two daughters, Barbara Smith and Wilma Owens, both of Cedartown; Sister, Myrtle Swafford of Cedartown; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Luther B. Stroup, 71, passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997 at his residence. Mr. Stroup was born April 12, 1926 in Polk County. He was a retired cab driver. Surviving are: three sons Dennis L. Stroup and Tommy Durden, both of Cedartown, and Franklin Langley of Rome; daughter, Beverly Parker of Rome; brother, Jonah Stroup, Jr., of Rome; two sisters, Katherine Bailey and Lillian Aring, both of Cedartown; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Ella Lee Tamplin, age 100, passed away Friday December 12, 1997 after an extended illness. Mrs. Tamplin was born November 2, 1897. She was the oldest living member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Woodsmen of the World. She was preceded in death by her husband Mr. J.B. Tamplin, one son Joe Boyd, Sr.. Survived by three sons: James A. Tamplin of Carrollton, Lynn Tamplin of Jacksonville, FL. and Leon Tamplin of Cedartown. Three daughters: Doris May of Marietta, GA, Berita Baker of Cedartown and Mary Ann Williams of Cedartown. One brother: Elbert Turner of Virginia. Fourteen grandchildren, twenty nine great grandchildren; 13 great great grandchildren and one great great great grandchild. Annie Vashti Tanner, 75, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997. Mrs. Tanner was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Esmer Tanner, Sr., and daughter, Mary Alred. Surviving are: two sons, Dean Tanner and Esmer Tanner, Jr., both of Cedartown; four daughters, Carolyn Liley, Yvonne Garner and Theresa Tanner, all of Cedartown; and Melissa Hardgrove of Felton; two sisters, Geneva Martin and Christine Weaver, both of Felton; 12 grandchildren. Mr. Elbert I. Thompson, age 80 of Rockmart, passed away Monday, December 29, 1997, in a Rome hospital. He was born on July 9, 1917, in Paulding County. He was a retired Paulding County Employee, a Mason and a member of Harmony Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Audie Hughes Thompson, and daughter Norma Ellison. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Williams Thompson, 2 sons, Douglas Thompson, Rockmart and Jimmy Thompson, Dallas, sister , Mrs. Irene Cook, Rockmart, 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren also survive. He was a member of Euharlee Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II, a retired Shannon Mills employee, and a former owner and operator of an auto body shop. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Brown Tucker. Surviving are: two brothers, Alfred Tucker of Rockmart and Edward Tucker of West Virginia; four sisters, Dorothy Ezzell and Lizzie Green, both of Rockmart, Evie Ford and Doris Knight, both of Columbia, S.C.; a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Louise Deems Waits, of Silver Creek, passed away Saturday, February 14, 1998 at her residence. Mrs. Waits was born September 4, in Bartow County. She was a retired Intergreated Products employee and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Water Lee and Minnie Alice Highfield Deems. Survivors include her husband, Earnest L. Waits of Silver Creek; a daughter, Betty J. Reynolds of Silver Creek; a son, Bobby Lamar Waits of Riverside, Calif.; two brothers Hershel Deems of Chickamauga, and Walter Lee Deems of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister Christine Marques of Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and the great great grandchildren. Donald E. "Double D" Walden, Sr., 45, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997 following a short illness. Mr. Walden was born June 9, 1952 in Knoxville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by mother, Mamie Alice King, and daughter, Amanda Christine Walden. Mr. Jerry Steven Walley, Sr., age 69, of Cedartown, passed away Sunday, December 28, 1997 after an extended illness. Mr. Walley was born on November 14, 1928, in Polk County and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cedartown. He retired from the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He was preceded in death by his parents, L. W. and Nellie Walley, and brother, Thomas Walley. Survivors include his wife Joann Isbell Walley, Cedartown; a daughter, Debbie Wallie Morman; a son, Jerry Steven Walley, Jr.; two grandchildren, and a great grandchild. Memorial services were held Monday December 29, 1997 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating. Mr. Barltett E. Walls, age 93, of Rockmart passed away Tuesday, February 17, 1998 in a Rome Hospital. Mr. Walls was born March 3, 1904, in Heard County. He was a retired Goodyear employee a member of the Rockmart First United Methodist Church where he was a choir member for over 50 years, a member and past master of the Rockmart Masonic Lodge #97 and served as secretary for 46 years, and a member of the Atlanta Yaarab Shrine Temple. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Maxwell Walls; and parents, Arzie and Lula Bledsoe Walls. Survivors include a daughter, Dondra W. White of Rockmart; four grandchildren; tow great grandchildren. The funeral service was held Thursday, February 19, 1998 at 111 a.m. from the Rockmart First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Autry officiating. Interment followed in Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rockmart Masonic Lodge #97 in charge of Masonic graveside rites. Cora W Whitaker, 93, passed away Tuesday, Oct 21, 1997. Mrs. Whitaker was born Aug. 30, 1904 in Haralson County. She was a former Aragon Mills employee and a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Tallapoosa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie C. Whitaker; parents, Samuel Dwynell and Dora Day Weaver; brother, Lowell Weaver; five sisters, Lorena Nix, Allie Thompson, Lillian Kinney, Ruby Gaines and Inez Ballard; and stepmother, Elza B. Weaver. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Whorton; parents, Henry Ferguson and Maggie Dowdy Whorton; and 2 sons, Clifford Kelly and Gifton Kelly. Survivors include five daughters, Ann Donaldson, Linda Millican, both of Cedartown, Bettie Lou Swinford, of Chatsworth, GA, Joyce Ann Broadway and Frances Dempsey, both of Lindale; three sons, Edward Kelly, Mark Whorton, and Glenn Whorton, all of Cedartown; two sisters, Frances Lorren, of Cedartown and Katie Coffee, of Gainesville; two brothers, Richard Ferguson of Cedartown, and James Ferguson, of Jackson MS; 26 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Ruby Catherine Williams, 82, passed away Saturday Nov. 29, 1997. Mrs. Lockridge was born Feb. 6, 1915 in Rock Run, Ala.. She was a member of Kresge Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was in the Blue and Gold Club and the Women,s Society. Survivors include: husband, Sam M. Lockridge of Cedartown; three daughters, Reba Daly of Florence, S.C., Gayle Mercer of Atlanta, and Brenda Howard of Cochran; two brothers, Don Williams of Cedartown and Bob Williams of Cairo; three sisters, Agnes White, Myrtle Lockridge and Besulah Gilliam, all of Cedartown; 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 10 a.m., in the Kresge Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Arnold officiating. Interment followed in Polk Memory Gardens. Serving as pallbearers were: Marytn Clarke Mercer, III, Samuel Mitchell Mercer, Paul Michael Daly, Jr., David Lockridge Daly, Leslie Thomas Howard Jr., and William Ashley Howard. The Litesey Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Doris L. Williams, 75, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997. Mrs. Williams was born Feb. 13, 1922 in Carroll County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Carl Williams of Cedartown, a sister Olive Carter of Cedartown, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home, with Rev. Danny Tucker officiating. Interment followed in North View Cemetery. Employees of the Cedar Valley Motor Corporation served as pallbearers. The Litesey Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Ida Lorene Worthington, 65 of Lynn Haven, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 1997 at her residence. Mrs. Worthington was an employee of Associates North America for 42 years, where she received numerous awards including the Silver Spike Award for Excellence and the Top Dog Award; and a member of the Lovedale Baptist Church of Lovedale, Fla. Surviving are: husband, Van Worthington of Lynn Haven; daughter, Vanessa Linthieum of Hill Air Force Base, Utah; two brothers, James Miller of Panama City, Fla., and Paul Miller of Carrollton; sister Maureen Pearce of Bascom, Fla., two grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and a number of local relatives. Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m., in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Brent Vickery officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Peg Burgdorf Wyatt of Nashville, Tenn., formerly of Cedartown passed away Tuesday, July 1, 1997 after an extended illness. She was a member of First Methodist Church of Cedartown. Surviving are: her husband, Whitlow Wyatt of Buchanan: daughter Jerri Burgdorf of Nashville; two sons, Jim Burgdorf of Atlanta and Ricky Burgdorf of Cedartown; and to grandchildren. Memorial services were held at a later date. This announcement was made for the family by the Gammage Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lillian Ziglar, age 86, passed away Friday, December 26, 1997. She was born May 4, 1911 in Dallas, GA. She was a member of The First Baptist Church of Cedartown and a retired school teacher with the Polk School District. Survivors include 2 daughters, Anne Parris, Huntsville, Ala., and Frances Ziglar, Nashville, Tn., 2 Sisters, Evelyn Biggers, Gainesville, GA., and Margaret Pollock, Anniston, Ala., 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. The funeral services were held Sunday, December 28, 1997 at 3:00 p.m., in the chapel of the First Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating. Interment followed in the Northview Cemetery. The family received friends Saturday, December 27, 1997 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Litesey Funeral Home of Cedartown. Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
