Commentary: Johnston retreated to Allatoona Pass on May 19-20, Sherman tried to move around Johnston's left flank and steal a march toward Dallas, Georgia. Sherman ordered Major Gen. Joseph Hooker's corps to attack and they were severely battered. On May 26th both sides entrenched and the intermixing went on throughout that day. The battles resume at:

Estimated Casualties: 1,600 Union Soldiers -- 500 Confederate Soldiers (Total 2,100)

Commentary: After the defeat at New Hope Major General William T. Sherman ordered Major General O. O. Howard to attack General Joseph E. Johnston's "thought to be exposed" right flank. The Confederates were ready for his attack, but the troops never appeared. The Rebels caused high casualties and the result was a Confederate Victory.


New Hope Church, Pumpkinvine Creek - Georgia
May 28th 1864 - Battle of Dallas

Estimated Casualties: 2,400 Union Soldiers - 3,000 Confederate Soldiers (Total 5,400)
Commentary: On May 28th the Battle of Dallas occurred. Fighting ensued at two points and the Rebels were repulsed and suffered high casualties. Sherman continued to look for a way around Johnston's line and on June 1 his Calvary occupied Allatoona Pass. Allatoona Pass had a railroad which would allow his men and supplies to get through by train. Sherman abandoned his lines @ Dallas on June 5 and moved toward the railhead at Allatoona Pass forcing Johnston to follow thereafter.]
