Will of James Vaughan

19 Sept 1796
Oglethorpe County, GA

Oglethorpe County, State of Georgia; In the name of God, Amen. Sworn this third day of July in the year of our Lord, one thousand, seven hundred and ninety-six. I, James Vaughan, of the County of Oglethorpe, being in a low state of health at present, and perfect memory of minds, thanks be to God; therefore calling to mind the mortality of man, and that it is appointed once for all men to die, I do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say, principally I recommend my soul unto the had of God that gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian like manner at the discretion of my executor, hopping at the resurrection to be received into the hands of Christ, my saviour, and as touching worldly estate as it has pleased God to bless me with, I dispose of the same in the following manner:

I also lend my beloved wife one Negro man named Joe and one Negro girl named Piner, two beds and furniture. I also lend my wife three cows and calves and one horse beast. I also lend my wife all the household furniture and kitchen furniture, and at her decease, the land all that I have lent my wife, to be sold and money to be equally divided among the lawful begotten children.

  • Item: I give to my daughter, Sarah Vaughan, one cow and one horse.
