TAX DIGEST

1828 MONROE COUNTY TAX DIGEST

 DEAR FELLOW MONROE COUNTY GEORGIA RESEARCHERS, May 1, 1999

In the Monroe County Probate Office is a book titled 1828 Monroe County Tax Digest.  In the book there are two sections of records. Microfilm 4/34 at the Georgia Archives has this note on the box:

The 1828 Digest is divided into 2 parts; The second is after 1832.

The first section is clearly the 1828 Tax Digest, starting with an index of the District Captains thru page 89 with a list of the defaulters.

The second record appears to have some missing pages with the second page as #2 and the record continues thru page 9 1.

It is my opinion that the Tax Digest was on or after 1842. The following analysis of many records is offered and used to draw this conclusion:

The following are deceased persons that someone else returned their taxes. The dates are death dates or will/probate filing. No death record could be located for those with no date. 

The 1840 census does not have forty four of those listed, two were found listed and six possible family members with the same name.
