Searching for information on GEORGE L. EARNEST b.5-20-1762, d. 12-31-1840. interred in the
"Strickland Town Cemetery" Meriweather Co. Ga. The mystery is that for years
back to 1850 only "STRICKLAND's" and family slaves were thought to have been
buried there, the oldest being Ezekiel STRICKLAND d. 1850. recently a brand new polished
marble grave marker appeared for the above mentioned GEORGE L. EARNEST. We
STRICKLAND's are curious as to who installed the marker and what relationship to our
family is he since he appears to be the eldest interred there. Respectfully

My gg grandfather, Marion Jasper HATCHETT, was an 1800's resident of Meriwether County in
a section known as The Cove. He is mentioned in the book "Historical Account of
Meriwether County" by Regina P. Pinkston. Marion Jasper HATCHETT was also a member of
the 7th GA Cavalry, partisan, CSA, which I am assuming was raised from the Meriwether
County area. While the service records of this unit exist on microfilm, I have been
unsuccessful in finding additional
information. The unit is not listed in "The Roster of Confederate Soldiers from
Georgia." Can anyone point me to a source of information about this unit?

MITCHAMS/MITCHUMS/MEACHAMS. I am researching my MITCHAM ancestors in Meriwether Co.
The name also shows up on different census records as MITCHUM and MEACHAM. Earliest known
anscestor was Elijah MITCHAM,b. abt 1790 d. after 1850 but before the 1860 census, wife
Rebecca. I found him beginning with the 1830 census. Possible children are:George
Washington,b abt. 1818, Willis (my ancestor), b. abt 1817/18, Thomas, b abt 1819, William
C., b. 1820, James, b. abt 1821, Elijah, Jr., b .abt 1826. Matilda, b. 1835 and Joel b.
abt 1837. The 1850 census shows Elijah Sr. and Rebecca with Elijah, Jr. Matilda and Joel
as being the only children still at home. I am trying to find out if Willis is definitly
Elijah and Rebecca's son. His daughter Laura Annette MITCHAM, b. 1860 married John Rufus
COSBY. They are my g grandparents. Some records also list Rebecca as believed to be
Indian--I am also trying to document this. The 1860 census shows that Rebecca was born in

I am searching for my g-ggrandfather, ROBERT PATTERSON. He

BLOUNT: Does anyone remember the family of Freeman W.
BLOUNT? I know where Freeman is buried. I am looking for the grave of his son, Eli H.
BLOUNT, who was my great grandfather. Eli was married to the former Mary Jane SMITH. He
applied for a Civil War pension in Meriwether County in 1893. The last year of payment for
the pension was 1897, so I assume he died in 1897 or 1898. Is there anyone familiar with
his wife's family who would know where she is buried? I assume neither grave has a marker

perhaps Charles Jones Terrell could have been buried in Meriwether rather than Coweta?

COLE- I am looking for any information regarding Martha, Mary and/or Rufus COLE. Martha is
listed as HH in the 1870 census with John, Mary age 20 and other children. Additional
children are in the 1880 census. By 1900 Mary is listed as HH with Rufus, James and other
children. Her marital status was listed as single and nothing was written in for years
married, but she listed as giving birth to six living children. Rufus married Bertha Bell
BRYAN in Meriwether County and moved south to Worth County (Doerun). Rufus and Bertha
(Birdie Bell) had eight children with the eldest (Estelle COLE). Estelle passed away last
year at the age of 94. She would never discuss her grandparents, making us believe
that there must be some family scandal. Martha and Mary owned property and stayed pretty
much in one spot for at least twenty years. Why would she have never married but had six
children? I can't find anything on Martha, Mary, John and James other than the census
records. I haven't found any marriage records, or burial places. Does anyone have any
clues?

I am trying to locate the ancestors of Rufus Jefferson Cole who was born in March 1881
(death certificate states Terrell County, Ga, but I believe Meriwether) and died Sept.
1937 in Worth County, GA. Rufus was listed in the 1900 Meriwether Census with Mary Cole
with
brother Jim and sister Livonia. Mary was listed in the 1880 Meriwether census in the
household of
Martha Cole and in the same household in 1870. It appears that Mary never married since
she was listed in 1870 in the hh of Martha and contined having children. The family
was listed on the census records as owning land; however, on a quick trip to Meriwether I
could find no records in the names listed. This line is my husband's. His grandmother,
Estelle Cole Johnson was the daughter of Rufus Jefferson Cole. She was the informant on
his death certificate and either didn't know or outright gave incorrect information even
though she was only in her 20s when Rufus died. She would never give anyone any
information regarding her father's family. It is supposed that Rufus married Bertha
(Birdie) Bell Bryan in Meriwether County although I could find no record. Estelle once
said at a family reunion that she was born in Meriwether (date August 25, 1905.) I would
greatly appreciate any information you could point me towards. Thanks!

Three of them married Cannon siblings. (The Cannon family migrated from Greene also.)

I am looking for family in the Meriwether county area. My great-grandfather was James C.
CORLEY (I do not know what the C. stood for). He had two sons, perhaps more. The ones that
I am positive of are Reuben CORLEY and Paul CORLEY. Reuben CORLEY was my grandfather. He
was married to Ludelia Obie HENDRIX. They are on the 1920 census in Meriwether county.
J.C. CORLEY married Mary BROWN in Griffin. They were on the 1900 census in Griffin. At
that time, they also had a 13-year-old son named Ed (probably J.C.'s son from a previous
marriage). There was also a son born to them in May 1897 by the name of Harry. Also,
a newborn daughter born in April 1900 by the name of Ruth. Reuben and Paul were born in
1902 and 1905, respectively, in Griffin. In 1920 on the Meriwether County census. J.C. is
now married to a woman by the name of Mattie. In their household lives Paul, who is 15 and
another son named Gladston who is 8. I do not know if this is J.C.'s son. Paul CORLEY was
marrried at age 17 to Jewel ROWE in 1922 in Meriwether county. They had 4 children, the
last of which was Robert CORLEY born in Meriwether county on October 31, 1929. In 1930,
according to the "The Vindicator" in Greenville, Georgia, Reuben and Paul got
into an argument over Jewel. Reuben shot and killed his brother and was sentenced to the
State Prison in Milledgeville. He survived for only 8 more years and died of an old stroke
and pulmonary tuberculosis. My mother was about 2 years old when this happened, so she
never knew her father or any of his family. It is said that my grandmother, Ludelia Obie
HENDRIX CORLEY never had anything to do with the CORLEY family after this tragedy. J. C.'s
birthplace, according to both his and Paul's death certificates, is S.C. However, all
census reports state that J. C.'s birthplace was Georgia. Does anyone know anything about
this family?

1939. They are the sisters of Wiley J. Middlebrooks and were mentioned in an obit
from 1939. Zudie or Judie Fulghum and Nancy Hunter were both residing in Warm Springs
during this time. I'm trying to locate information on Zudie's marriage, death and
children. I think one of her children (Annie Delle) is a relative. Thanks,

My gg-grandfather David S. Brown, born in Meriwether Co., Ga. 1815 is listed on LDS family
search site. It shows on microfilm that he has a relative named William Brown. I
have tracked David S. Brown to Meriwether County in Census records and marriage
records. David S. Brown married Jemimma Whitley in Meriwether County, Ga. I know
that there were lots of BROWN family living in The Cove of Meriwether County. Is my
David S. Brown related to the William Brown mentioned in the history of The
Cove. Does anyone have any information on the WHITLEY's of Meriwether
County? Any help would be appreciated.

BLOUNT, Eli H., my great grandfather, was buried in Woodbury, Georgia, according to his
death certificate filed 6-9-1897. Does anyone know the location of the cemetery in
Woodbury and whether he has a marker? It is possibly a Smith Cemetery as his wife's
maiden name was Mary Jane Smith. If anyone has the book "Meriwether County
Cemeteries" by Priscilla Turner, please do a look up for me. Thanks in
advance!
