I'm looking for information on John or Thomas CONNER from Lincoln County, GA. His father John Conner Shehee paid tax in Lincoln County on land he owned in district 8 Troup County. This section became Meriweather County Dec 1827. John did not use his father's last name-went by name John CONNER and had several Children  one son was THOMAS. I see a THOMAS CONNER in the 1840 GA census index but that is the only records that I have on Mriweather County. If anyone has the tax records for 1831 forward I would appreciate some information. John left Lincoln County after 1830 and I suspect that he ended up in Alabama.

I am looking for info on a David Armstrong DENNY b. 1857, d. 1886. Also Melia Booker DENNY b. 1861, d. 1915. Also George Wm. BUCHANAN b. 1869, d. 1916. Also Emma Francis FANT b. 1872, d. 1939. It apears Meriwether was home to all. Some died in Troup County, LaGrange, Georgia. The DANIEL family of Troup County is related somehow. The MCKOYS around Warm Springs and Durand are related also? My mother often talked about Uncle Ben Matthews who was a law enforcement officer in the early 1900s in Troup County. Lone Oak and St. Mark's communities also are included. I am searching for any information on a family that was living in Meriwether Co. in 1860.  Head of household was Henry Ervin CHAPMAN, b. S.C. who was married (either in Meriwether Co. or Talbot Co.) to Susan "Susie" C. WHITE. On the 1860 census they listed the children as:  R.A.E. (Rowena), Henry, James, Henrietta, Mary E., and Susan C.  They lived next door to "A.A. CHAPMAN", who was probably his brother but was listed as born in Georgia.  Which would mean they moved to Georgia between 1830 and 1840.  Does anybody know this family? Thanks.

We located the marriage of John S. MIZE and Jane K. KEELING that took place in Meriwether County on Oct.17, 1852.  The "S." stands for "Shepherd".  From the family bible and census records, John was born in Georgia June 24, 1827 and died Aug.7, 1906 in Loudon, TN. Jane was born in Georgia Aug.23, 1832 and died Dec.29, 1899 in Loudon, TN.  Both are buried in Riverview Cemetery in Loudon.  We also located John in the 1850 Meriwether census, living in the household of John L. Dixon, at the age of 23, a carpenter, and under the last name spelling "Mies".  We also found, in the same census, who we believe to be John's father, James "Mies" MIZE, age 56, mechanic, born S.C., with wife Elizabeth, 51, VA., and daughters Elizabeth, 21, Amanda, 16, Malissa, 13, and Adaliza, 12, all born in GA. This may be the same James in the 1830 Newton County census, and the same James who was born in Union County, SC, and whose father Shepherd MIZE moved the family to Putnam County, GA in 1806.  James MIZE family also appears in the 1860 Meriwether census, with the correct last name spelling, with daughters Malissa and perhaps widowed Amanda HANCOCK living at home.  In the 1850 census we located the Thomas J. KEELING family, with the last name misspelled as "Kelan".  Jane appeared as an 18 year old daughter.  This family was also located in the 1860 census under the correct KEELING spelling, with the widowed Sarah as the head of the family.  If anyone has any additional information, including Meriwether cemetery burials, I would appreciate hearing.

I have hit one of those stone walls and am looking here on a hunch and a small piece of information.  I am looking for a Dennis SHILLING. He was born in Louisiana around 1810, the next official record I have is an 1850 census in Pickens Co., AL.  He has five children listed there, four of which were born in GA.  He likely traveled to Meriwether Co. with a Clement DAVIS family, perhaps he was married to one of his daughters.  His first son, John Thomas SHILLING was born in 1833.  There is a SHILLING on the 1840 Index of the Meriwether Co., Census. Can anyone verify if this is Dennis SHILLING? And who his wife was? He was married for the second time in the Pickens Co., AL census.  Does anyone have any information on the Clement DAVIS family? Thank you so much for any help you can give me.

Did Warren Oliver PERRY (b abt 1832) enlist in the Confederacy in Meriwether County?  He is shown on the 1850 census with his brothers James, b abt 1828, and Henry, b abt 1829.   The three are on the 1860 census for Meriwether but by 1862, James and Henry were living in  Columbia County, AR where they enlisted.  I have not been able to determine if Warren Oliver actually moved there.  But I do know that he was killed in the war. Warren Oliver Perry had married Missouri Ananet JERNIGAN in Marion Co, GA in 1852 but did not enlist in that county either.

TERRELL FIELDER. My gggggrandfather, Terrell Fielder, and his wife, Rebecca Nolan Fielder, originally of Morgan County, Ga.,  moved to Meriwether County in 1833 according to an article written in 1895.  Terrell fought in the War of 1812, and received some land in this county for his service in the war. Terrell was a Baptist minister, and the article states that he organized a Baptist Church in the county, the first one in that part of the State of Georgia.  He and his family lived in Meriwether County until 1851, when they moved to Tallapoosa County, Alabama. I would like to hear from anyone who is researching this family in hopes of learning more about them, and I"ll be happy to exchange information. Thanks!

No documents, but I am told Mable was born July 26, 1898, and died in Meriwether County in 1967. Nothing on Hoak Bullock, except it was told Hoak was the Sheriff of Meriwether County at one time. I would greatly appreciate any help you may render. Thanking you in advance.

I've hit a stone wall in tracing my WOODARD family past my great grandfather, David C. WOODARD, born about 1834 and died in 1864 while serving in Company "E", 39th Alabama Volunteer Infantry in the defense of Atlanta. His Confederate Army records indicate that he was 28 years old when he joined the 39th Alabama in 1862. He married Mary A. POSEY on 2 Feb. 1860 in Russell County, AL.  I've found census data relative to his son, Thaddeus David WOODARD, that show that Thaddeus David indicated on the census that his father, David C. WOODARD, was born in Georgia.  I've very recently gotten access to old family letters suggesting that the family came from Meriwether County. At the time of the 1850 census David C. WOODARD would have been about 16 years of age. Therefore, I expect he would have been included as a member of a WOODARD family, hopefully in Meriwether County. If anyone is aware of a WOODARD/WOODWARD family living in Meriwether County about the time of the 1850 census, and who had a son named David, please let me know whatever details may be available. I include the WOODWARD spelling since I've found this to be such a common error in documents of this period that I would like to be able to look for the linkage under both spellings. Any information that can be furnished about WOOD(W)ard families of that period will be very much appreciated.

I am trying to find any information on my African-American ancestors who were born in Durand, Ga. who later moved to Columbus,Ga.which is where I was born and lived until marriage. The family surnames are STINSON, BROWN, HALL, WILLIAMS and PARKS. Willie "Pete" Williams, my grandfather, was born in Durand on March 2,1902. On his death certificate his mother was listed as Mandy Brown and father as Hill Williams. He later left Durand around age 17 and moved to Columbus where he lived until his death in 1981. He would often tell family members that his real last name was "Brown"  which leads the family to belive that Mandy (his mother) and Hill  may not have been married. Willie had a sister name Minnie Parks who had a son name Willie Parks or "Bro"  as he was sometimes called. Willie married my grandmother, Nettie Stinson, who also was from Durand. On her death certificate her parents are listed as Frank and Ola Stinson. We know absolutly nothing about her family except  that when she married Willie she had a son named Charlie Frank Williams who took the last name of Williams. On his death certificate his parents are listed as Nettie Stinson and a G. Moss. Charlie Frank was also born in Durand around 1918 but moved to Columbus and served in WW2.  Nettie Stinson died in Columbus in 1950 leaving behind  6 young children, my mother being one of them. Today there are only 2 children still living who know very little about their ancestors. We do know that Nettie would vist Durand every August  for a church reunion and that she would take her 2 youngest children by train to visit, staying with cousins named Stella and Jim Hall who had a farm. They also had a son by the name of Percell Hall Sr. whose wife was named Elenor or Evelyn Hall. They had a son called Percell Hall Jr. Nettie Stinson died on April 5, 1950 and was buried in Durand at a church cemetery called Trinity Cemetery. This is all the family knows. I would appreciate any help or information on my ancestors. I  am in the military at a base in Va.and this makes it hard to get to Ga.to try and obtain info so anything is helpful. Thank you.

Seeking information on the EVANS and GODFREY families. Earliest ancestors I know are Elijah EVANS, Sr., b. about 1790, d. after 1860, and wife Mary REED/REID/READ (?), b. about 1794, d. after 1860. Researching Arthur Wright, b. GA around 1828; found an Arthur Wright on records (tax list?) in both Meriwether and Troup counties.  This Arthur would have been in Jefferson Co AL by 1900.  His wife would probably have been a Judson or a Thomas (not sure), and my great-grandmother was his daughter.  She was born in GA in the 1850s and would have been called Sarah or Ann, not sure.  Thanks for any info if you've run across him. Thanks!

I am descended from Fergusons who lived in Terrell County GA in the mid 1800s. I am trying to determine if there is a link to Joseph FERGUSON who is reported to have died in Meriwether County in 1831. I believe that my Fergusons are descendents of a Joseph FERGUSON.
