Robert Thomas Rogers was born 13 Dec 1844 in Jackson
County, Georgia. He was the son of William S. Rogers and Cementha Elizabeth
Stapler.
On 25 Feb 1862, at the age of 18, Robert enlisted with Company C, 18th GA Regiment CSA at
Jefferson, Jackson County. He suffered a grape shot wound to his side at Gaines'
Farm (Cold Harbor) on 27 Jun 1862 and was admitted to the Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond,
Virginia. He was later granted a pension for this wound, receiving $50 from 1898 to
1913.
Robert married Mary Elizabeth Clarissa Smith on 1 Sep 1864 in Madison
County. She was the daughter of William M. Smith and Martha "Patsey"
Bowman. Robert built and operated Rogers Mills, which sawed lumber, ginned cotton
and ground grain, and for which the community of Rogers Mill is named. He died in
Madison County on 17 Mar 1914 and was buried at the Smith-Rogers family cemetery. |
