The original letter is in the possession of Katie Ruth Hall Albea of Washington, Ga.Jeremiah Hall was born July 26, 1834 in Madison County, Georgia, the son of William Hall and Orpha Nelms. He was married on 2 Nov 1854 to Frances L. Porterfield, daughter of James Porterfield & Tabitha Bond, also of Madison County. James was also a Civil War soldier. Jeremiah enlisted in the Confederacy on March 10, 1862 in Company G, 37th. Ga. Regiment. He was wounded in the battle at Franklin, Tenn. and died April 19, 1865. The reference to the death of Allen referred to Allen Porterfield, also a casualty of the war, who was the brother of Frances Porterfield, wife of Jeremiah Hall.
