House-Andrews Family

Left: Parthenia Andrews, born Oct 4, 1835 Wilkes County, GA died Jul 21 1915 Jackson County, AR.
Center: Thought to be Benson H. Cooper, a brother-in-law
Right: Benson's wife Mollie Lawson

1st Married George House - 6 Oct 1851, Lincoln County, GA
2nd Married Edward Holleman
3rd Married: Dillard L. Cooper

Parthenia ANDREWS was born in Wilkes or Lincoln County, GA in 1835. She was the daughter of Michael L. (?Latham) ANDREWS b 1798 GA and Parthenia PULLIN born 1806 GA. (Parthenia shows up as Bethenia, etc.).

This Michael L. ANDREWS family is on the 1850 census Lincoln, GA Dist. 52, and also in the household is George HOUSE.  George HOUSE married the daughter Parthenia 1851 Wilkes Co., GA.  In 1855-56, the ANDREWS family, along with their children migrated to eastern Arkansas, St. Francis County / Monroe County area, near the town of Brinkley, AR.  I have tracked them on the census there.

I am researching my ANDREWS, PULLEN (Pullin, etc.) HOUSE line, which includes other surnames / alliances, including WILLIS. I have a little more information on the ANDREWS line than I do on the PULLIN and HOUSE lines. And while HOUSE is not my bloodline, I do want to track it enough to at least identify the parents / family of George N. (or M) HOUSE who was born about 1831 GA.

Re my PULLIN line, there is a Guilford PULLIN on the 1850 census on the page before my Michael L. ANDREWS family in Dist. 52 Lincoln.  I think he was in Wilkes County earlier ...and he was near several other PULLINs, as well as ANDREWS ...including the judge Garnett ANDREWS (who had the daughter Eliza Frances ANDREWS that wrote "Wartime Journal of a Georgia Girl."  In my old bible, and in our family lore, my gg grandmother Parthenia ANDREWS was said to have been born in Wilkes County.

Parthenia and her children later moved into Brinkley, and as a widow she took in sewing for awhile (1900 census), eventually moving to Jackson County near Newport to live with her daughter Clara COOPER and her McLAIN husband. 1910 census.  Parthenia died July 15, 1915 in Jackson County, but mysteriously I can't find her burial site, even though the McLAIN family has a large burial area in Newport's Walnut Grove Cemetery. Perhaps she was buried alongside a husband somewhere on farmland in St. Francis or Monroe County Arkansas.

Below are the old bible records I have transcribed, showing the family name as ANDERS rather than ANDREWS which I think is really correct.  You will note more children's names / deaths ... than appear on the 1850 census in Lincoln, Dist. 52.  I do have more information on the ANDREWS children and their marriages in Arkansas---3 sisters of Parthenia married MUNS / MUNNS men.

Parthenis migrated 1855-56 to St. Francis County Arkansas with her parents Michael L. (Latham) ANDREWS and Parthenia PULLIN and her ANDREWS brothers and sisters (sisters married MUNNS men in AR) and her 1st husband, the overseer for Michael L. ANDREWS, George M. HOUSE. George was born about 1824 Georgia, and their first child Juliann Caldonia HOUSE born Nov. 4, 1853 Georgia (prob. Lincoln County). (Bible Record). George M. George M. HOUSE died during / after Civil War. Parthenia remarried (date not found) about 1865 to Edward HOLLEMAN (Holeman, Holman) ...1870 census AR...E. HOLMAN was born about 1815 in VA or IL, and died March 18, 1873 Monroe County AR. (Bible record).

Aug. 18, 1876, Parthenia married Dillard L. COOPER, Monroe County, AR. Dillard had been married at least 1 time and I found a Martha Jane HELMS marriage and an 1870 census for them, plus an infant son. Dillard L. COOPER was born June 8, 1838 Spartanburg Co, Thickety, South Carolina, and died Monroe County near Brinkley April 9, 1884 from pneumonia suffered after fighting a fire that was threatening his farm and split-rail fence. His parents Benson G. COOPER and Delphia LINDSEY migrated to St. Francis County from SC before the 1850 census.

Parthenia had 8 children, 5 which survived according to the 1910 census in Jackson County AR. Known children I have found are:

1=Juliann Caldonia (Calley) HOUSE b 04 Nov. 1853 GA, possibly married T.S. BRUMLY / BROMLEY, then John ALMAN / ALLMAN and had 1 daughter Ollie BROMLEY, born about 1888 AR. Calley was living 1900 and 1910 in Jackson County, AR, Breckenridge twp. I have been unable to find more information to date.

2=**Martha HOUSE b about 1856 St. Francis Co, AR. I found a possible 1880 marriage record for a Mollie HOUSE, but age 18 in 1880 for Martha right, so she **may have died after 1870, before Parthenia married COOPER.

**Possible marriage record--
Monroe County AR Marriage Records, Book E, p 21
 J. B. BURTE, 21, to Miss Mollie HOUSE, 18,
both of Cotton Plant, by S. W. Davis, JP 28 Dec 1880

3=Alex HOUSE born about 1861 AR. This marriage may be for Alex ... I have been unable to date to track his line.
Monroe County AR Marriage Records, Book E pg 29
Alex HOUSE, 23, to Miss Margaret YOUNG, 18, both of Cotton Plant, by J.M. Harris MG, October 8, 1885

4=Elizabeth "Lizzie" HOLMAN (married Daniel MALOY) b April 1866 AR. I've tracked her line through son Lee A. MALOY and Lee's daughter Katie Mahaley Estelle Maloy Mahan. I have a photo of Lizzie HOLMAN MALOY.

5=Wm. Edward HOLMAN b Jul. 1867 Monroe Co, AR. I have had some good luck on this line, finding 1st wife Susan DOOLEY and 3 children, and 2nd wife Rosa Bettye PHILLIPS and a large family ... in Woodruff and Monroe Counties AR. I have a photo of W.E.HOLMAN and son Wm. Franklin Andrew HOLMAN by the 1st wife DOOLEY, and a photo of 2nd wife Rosie B. PHILLIPS and 2 of the 6 children I found, Nellie and Charley.

6=Clara D. COOPER b 21 July 1878 Monroe Co, Brinkley AR, married March 27, 1898 to W.D. McLAIN, a large landowner, sawmill owner and Jackson Co. AR Judge 1914-1919. He died Oct. 1921. She lived past age of 100 and died while living with a son, Alvin C. McLAIN in McNeil / Magnolia, AR 15 March 1979. She is buried in Little Rock, AR by another son Robert Cline "Pat" McLAIN.

This accounts for the 5 children that survived, though I do not have the names of 8 that she claimed to have had on the 1910 census. I think it was the child Martha (of the 6 above shown) that died, and I am soon going to pursue harder the Alex HOUSE line.

Parthenia died about age 86, July 21, 1915 Newport, Jackson County, Arkansas while living with her daughter Clara COOPER McLAIN and Clara's husband Jackson County Judge William David McLAIN. According to my mother born 1920 Newport, AR, Clara and W.D. had built Parthenia a little house behind their home in East Newport (I have a photo of the main house) and she moved in with the family sometime after the 1900 census (when she was living in Brinkley, Monroe County, AR). I have not yet been able to find a death notice in the old newspapers for Newport, AR, nor have I found a burial record. She may have been buried on the COOPER land near Brinkley, possibly in Woodruff County or Monroe County, AR.

I have many photos of Parthenia and Dillard L. COOPERs daughter Clara---- my great grandmother Clara COOPER McLAIN and her children. Clara and W.D. McLAIN's firstborn child, daughter Audrey McLAIN born Jan. 1, 1900 Newport, Jackson Co AR, is my grandmother in her July 1919 marriage to Robert E. WASHBURN of St. Louis MO. Their only child, Frances "Clotine" WASHBURN WILLIAMS is my mother, born April 16, 1920 Newport, Jackson Co AR.

Regarding Parthenia's brothers and sisters who were also born in Wilkes or Lincoln County GA, I have some census and marriage data on them and their families and can provide it if you like at another time.  One of the sisters, Julia Ann ANDREWS born 1830 Wilkes GA, married 1st to James PULLEN 1854 Lincoln GA. He died in AR I think after 1856, and she remarried William J. MUNNS about 1859 AR. Julia Ann ANDREWS PULLEN MUNNS died Nov. 1, 1861 St. Francis / Woodruff County, AR (bible record, and Loose Probate Records of Woodruff County ... which I am about to order.) The 2 other sisters, Mary Catherine ANDREWS and Henrietta Elisabeth ANDREWS also married in Arkansas to MUNNS men... apparently all brothers.

With the help of some other researchers, I have ancestral information on the ANDREWS line in GA and back to North Carolina, as well as some info on the PULLEN / PULLIN line and allied lines. But I still have many unanswered questions.

Thank you so much!
