It is important to Lincoln County research to know that the present border with McCormickCounty,SC was not established until 1916 when McCormick was formed. Prior to that Abbeville and Edgefeild Co's., SC were the eastern border. There are many instances of records in SC and GA for families in this area so you should check in both states. It has been suggested that our ancestor's, that where not landowner's in Ga. might have claimed to live in SC to avoid the Ga Poll tax. I don't know how true that might be, but there where numerous ferries and it should be taken into consideration.
The map on the far right shows 1800 SC with Abbeville to the north and Edgefeild to the south with an insert that shows present day McCormick Co.,SC. At some point between1769 and 1785 the area became Abbeville and Edgefeild, before that it was known as the 96 District.
