This site is dedicated to the pioneer families who settled in beautiful Lincoln County and called it home. The purpose of The GaGenWeb site is to assist genealogy researchers in finding information about their Lincoln County ancestors. The GAGenWeb's parent project, the USGenWeb Project, consists of a group of volunteers working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States. The Project is non-commercial and fully committed to free access for everyone. My thanks to the previous County Coordinators for their outstanding work, and permission to retain what they achieved. I will continue to build on their work. If you have information, documents, photos or anything of interest to Lincoln County folks, and are willing to share, please contact me. We are always in need of help. Copyrighted materiel is not used except with the permission of the copyright owner.
Lincoln County is located in the Northeast area of Georgia and borders the Savannah River and Clark's Hill Lake. Our neighboring counties are Elbert, McDuffie , the GaGenWeb Wikes County site, Wilkes (Keith Giddeon's site) and Wilkes (Tom Hammack's site), and Columbia, GA, and McCormick County, SC. As McCormick Co., SC was not formed until 1912, Abbeville and Edgefield Counties of SC may also be of interest. Lincoln County was carved out of Wilkes County in 1796 and named for Major General Benjamin Lincoln, Revolutionary War hero who commanded the Battle of Savannah.
In the days before white man came, the area was inhabited by the Cherokee and Creek Indians. Pioneers, having heard about the beauty and the excellent resources, began to move into the territory as early as 1750. The tribes ceded the land to the United States in 1773 when Wilkes County was formed. There were conflicts between settlers and Indians until 1774 when a peace treaty was signed.
