CONFEDERATE ALABAMA TROOPS
37th Regiment, Alabama Infantry
37th Infantry Regiment was organized at Auburn, Alabama, during the spring of 1862. Its members were recruited in the counties of Tallapoosa, Pike, Henry, Macon, Barbour, Chambers, and Russell. Ordered to Mississippi the unit fought at Iuka and lost heavily at Corinth. Later it was assigned to General J.C Moore's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and was active at Chickasaw Bayou, Port Gibson, and Champion's Hill. Only July 4, 1863, it was captured at Vicksburg. After being released, the 37th was attached to J.C. Moore's, A. Baker's, Gibson's, and Brantley's Brigade. It was engaged at Chattanooga, Resaca, Noonday Creek , Kennesaw Mountain, and in the battles around Atlanta. During the winter of 1864-1865 it was on garrison duty at Spanish Fort, then returned to the Army of Tennessee in North Carolina. The regiment reported 73 casualties at Chattanooga and totalled 407 men and 359 arms in December, 1863. During the Atlanta Campaign, May 7 to June 2, it lost 15 killed, 86 wounded, and 8 missing. About 75 officers and men surrendered in April, 1865. The field officers were Colonel James F. Dowdell, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander A. Greene, and Majors John P.W. Amerine and William F. Slaton.

37th Alabama Infantry Regiment
The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Auburn, in the spring of 1862, under the requisition of President Jefferson Davis for 12,000 more Alabamians. The members were recruited from Barbour, Chambers, Henry, Macon, Pike, Russell, and Tallapoosa counties. Ordered to Columbus, MS, after a short time, the regiment proceeded to Tupelo. There it was placed in Gen'l Henry Little's Division, and in the Brigade of Col. Martin of TN, with three Mississippi regiments. Gen'l Dabney Herndon Maury succeeded Gen'l Little when the latter was killed at Iuka, where the 37th was first engaged, with some loss. The regiment took part in the Battle of Corinth, losing heavily in casualties. The brigade commander fell at Corinth, and the 37th was thrown into a brigade with the 2nd TX, and 42nd AL, Gen'l John C. Moore commanding. The winter was spent in MS -- the regiment retreating from Holly Springs and taking part in the repulse of the invaders at Chickasaw Bayou. Early in 1863, the 37th was sent to the Sunflower River but went back in time to take part in the battles of Port Gibson and Champion Hill, where its losses were severe. The regiment was then assigned to the garrison of Vicksburg and was captured with the fortress. Exchanged soon after, the regiment was in parole camp at Demopolis. Ordered to the Army of Tennessee, it lost heavily at Lookout Mountain and quite a number at Mission Ridge. The winter passed at Dalton, GA, where Gen'l Alpheus Baker of Barbour took charge of the brigade. The regiment was then engaged at Chattanooga (73 casualties our of 407 men present), Resaca, Noonday Creek, Kennesaw, and the battles around Atlanta. In one charge at Atlanta, 22 July, the regimental commander and 40 men were killed outright, out of 300 men present. During the fall and winter, the 37th was on garrison duty at Spanish Fort but moved into NC. It broke the enemy line at Bentonville, and furled its colors a few days later, with 300 of its number present out of the 1100 who took the field originally.
Field officers: Col. James F. Dowdell (Chambers Co., captured at Vicksburg and retired). Lt. Cols. A. A. Greene (Chambers Co., wounded, Iuka, Mission Ridge; KIA, Atlanta); and W. F. Slaton (Macon Co.). Majors John P. W. Amorine (Pike Co., transferred); W. F. Slaton (wounded, Corinth; captured, Lookout Mountain; promoted); and Joel C. Kendrick (Covington Co.)
[The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Consolidated, was organized on 9 April 1865 by combining the original 37th Alabama with the 42nd and 54th Alabama regiments, at Smithfield, NC. The unit(s) surrendered on 26 April 1865 at Durham Station, Orange County, NC. Field officers: Col. John A. Minter and Lt. Col. William D. McNeill.]
Family lore says that the Sarah was born in Alabama in July 1865. I found the Civil War record on Andrew J. Murray at the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors web site. Also, in the book, "Lincoln County Genealogy and History" there are several letters written by Lt. B.S. Wright of Co. G. 1st Reg. In one letter written from Atlanta July, 1864, he states that one of his messmates was A.L. Murray. In the handwriting of the time a J could easily be mistaken for an L. This must be our Andrew.
Andrew Jackson Murray is listed in 1860 census for Lincoln County, Goshen community. Occupation was merchant. Personal value $3,000. Age 31. Wife listed as Ann. Age 21. According to other information from her tombstone, she would have been 23.
On the 1870 census his age is listed as 38 (actual age was 41) and Ann's as 33. His occupation as farmer and hers as housekeeper. Children listed are William, age 9; David, age 8; Sarah A., age 5; Nancy, age 2 and John P., age 10-12 months.
Andrew Jackson Murray and Eleanor Anne Glaze are buried in the Glaze Memorial Cemetery near Midway Church in Lincoln County, Ga.

Lincoln County Journal, April, 1914
In the death of Mr. Andrew J. Murray which occurred at an early hour last Saturday morning at his late residence near Goshen everybody in Lincoln County felt a deep and sincere sorrow. The aged and respected man had been ill for Some time and his recovery had been despaired of by those of his family who nursed him tenderly in his last days. He was of rugged, strong constitution and had withstood the ravages of time and sickness longer than his three score and ten years. He was 84 years old when he died and until recently displayed wondrous vitality. For many years Mr. Murray lived in Lincoln County. Here it was that he married a daughter of the late Grant Glaze and their union was blessed with five children who are now grown up and prominent in the business and social circles of the communities in which they reside. The children are Mr. W. T. Murray, a prominent farmer of this county; Mr. J.P. Murray, who serves as United States Deputy Marshall of this district of Georgia; Mr. David Murray of Florida, Mrs. Will (Sarah) Drinkard and Miss Nancy Murray. There was widespread sorrow when news of the death of Mr. Murray was circulated last Saturday and the funeral which was held at the old Grant Glaze place last Sunday, was largely attended by saddened friends and relatives. The Lincolnton Masonic Lodge of which the deceased had long been a member buried their dead with impressive ceremonies and Rev. LeRoy conducted the funeral.
