Rufus Durrah,
of Barnesville completed his final tour of duty and was called to his
eternal home with the Lord Dec. 25, 2014.
Mr. Durrah was born
on Aug. 22, 1911, in The Rock to the late Roxanna Harris Durrah
and the late Green Durrah. He was one of eight children born to
this union.
Rufus was educated in
the Lamar County school system, attending Barnesville
Industrial School.
He joined the
Army in 1942, serving a four year tour and being honorably
discharged in 1946. While in the military, he served in World War II
and was decorated with many awards including the WWII Victory Medal,
the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific
Service Medal, the American Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
After leaving the
military, Rufus moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he became an
entrepreneur, owning a grocery store and rental properties. Upon
retirement, he moved to Dade City, Fla., and later
moved back home to Barnesville to be near family and friends.
He was preceded in death by all of his siblings, Minnie Durrah, Emmie Holloway, Mattie Ivey, Edgar Durrah, Jake Durrah, Lillie Brady and Ruby Drinkard. He had a kind spirit and was loved by all who knew him. Survivors include a daughter, Patsy K. Mann of Barnesville; a granddaughter, Lakeisha Mann of Hampton; a grandson, Miguel Ogletree of Hampton; nieces and nephews, Louise Gordon of Cleveland, Willie Lee Benson of Pittsburgh, Penn., Lillian King (Harry) of Cleveland, Don Durrah of Atlanta, Hasel Smith (Burton) of Roswell, Edward Brady (Bonnie) and Jean Carr of Cincinnati and Harold Ivey (Elouise) of Barnesville; 14 great-nieces and 14 great-nephews; and a host of other family and friends who will miss him dearly. Services were held at 12 noon Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Welcome Grove Baptist Church in Thomaston. Revs. Randy King and Eddie F. Collier officiated.
