Obituary. It becomes our painful duty to
record another of those dispensations of Providence, over which the heart
lingers with sad and sorrowful memory.
In the month of May 1849,
a company of young men from the counties of Jones, Jasper and Putnam, left
for the gold regions in California - among them
WILIE
J. BARRON, the subject of this notice. In possession of fine health,
with a constitution unimpaired, and habitually energetic, few young men
had fairer prospects for a long and useful life - but before reaching St.
Louis he was attacked with the Cholera, from which he never fully recovered.
After great suffering, privation and fatigue, the company reached the Sacramento
Valley sometime in October, where, during an unusual severe winter, he
continued to decline until the first day of March, when in the language
of his Physician, "he died in peace with God and man," Our young friend,
who would have been 23 years old had he lived nine days longer, was the
second son of the late Captain William Barron, of Jones county -
amiable and generous in his disposition, with an unblemished moral character,
he was much esteemed by all that knew him, and although his remains are
reposing on the banks of the Sacramento in a far distant clime, his memory
will long be cherished by his friends and acquaintances here. D.

Our community has again
been shocked by the melancholy and premature death of one of our most worthy
and valuable citizens. DAUPHIN
LEWIS PITTS, eldest son of Capt. John Pitts, deceased, was born
on the 2d day of August, 1830, an died on the 26th inst., in the 25th year
of his age. He walked out of his house soon after dinner, in the full enjoyment
of perfect health, and in a few minutes was discovered lying on the ground
senseless and bleeding profusely, as was supposed from a kick from his
horse. He was immediately carried into the house and medical aid summoned
without avail. He lingered until about three o'clock, P.M., without being
able to tell anything of the said accident. He joined the M. E. Church
four or five years ago, and although he was not permitted to tell his friends
what were his hopes beyond the grave, we yet trust the dread summons found
him not unprepared. His was, though quiet, was orderly and exemplary. He
was a humane master, an affectionate husband, and a devoted father. He
was industrious, economical, energetic and strictly honest and upright.
He has left a wife and two small children, besides numerous relatives and
friends to mourn his loss; but the "sorrow not as those without hope."
His remains were followed to the
grave and deposited in their last sad resting place by a large concourse
of sorrowing and afflicted relations and friends. B.

P. Barron, son of the late Wm. & Sarah D. Barron, was born
in Morgan county, Ga. Nov. 15, 1830. He united with the M.E. Church and
professed conversion in 1850. Feeling that it was his duty to labor in
the Master's Vineyard, he obtained license to exhort. He graduated with
distinction at Emory College, July, 1851. In August of the same year he
became Principal of the Male Academy in Clinton, Ga., (the place which
had been his home since the 12th year of his age,) in which responsible
position he continued to labor until last Fall, when his health became
so feeble that he was compelled to relinquish his charge. During the present
year continued hemorrhage of the lungs evinced that he was rapidly sinking
under Consumption, and yielding to the solicitations of friends, accompanied
by his mother, the went to Philadelphia, where he died in great peace,
