IN HONOR of JONES COUNTY GENEALOGISTS

Carolyn Williams - The History of Jones County

Carolyn White Williams, author of History of Jones County, Georgia 1807-1907, died during the night April 21, 2002. She was 103 [birthday in June]. Services are tentatively set for Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. Simpson-Childs Funeral Home in Gray has charge of services.
The book, History of Jones County, is dedicated to her son, John Thomas Williams Nov. 19, 1927 to Jun 16, 1949. His picture shows him in a navy uniform. A very nice looking young man.
In June 1949, her son was tragically killed in an accident, and to "save her sanity", Carolyn poured her energy into preserving Jones County history.
Mrs. Williams had been a school teacher, a Sunday School teacher, and played the piano, but had never actually written anything before. Her love of history and interest in people of Jones County gave her the motivation to gather all of the material.
She had an old typewriter and used the "hunt and peck" method to type all of this up. (Can you imagine how much time it took?!!) She frequented the Archives in Atlanta and also the Washington Memorial Library in Macon to obtain as much information on families as she could. She put out the word in the county asking for everyone to write up their own stories.
The first edition was done by a local printer, and just as it was being started, a strike closed the shop, and Mrs. Williams had to bring home all the plates that had been prepared.

Mrs. Williams recommended that a second volume be done to continue where she left off. Her thanks for help in compiling the book went to her husband; the Jones County Ordinary, Harris Morton ; the Clerk, F. M. Stewart, Jr. for allowing her to use the records freely. Appreciation also went to S. H. Griswald for the articles that appeared in the Jones County News edited by Mark Greene. The Washington Memorial Library, the Dept. of Archives and History in Atlanta, the library of Hon. J. B. Jackson of Gray, and the scrapbooks of Mrs. Sophie Howard Myrick of Haddock
She also wrote a History of Greene County using materials that a druggist had saved and given to her.
Mrs. Hambrick is glad that we're spreading her mother's work through the Internet to help all those folks who can't get to Jones County.
