ACADEMY BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY

 

Academy Baptist Church was established in Jackson County, GA in 1812.  The setting is picturesque and peaceful and makes it easy to imagine a time when early settlers in the county picked this spot for their worship and buring ground.  The oldest marked grave in the cemetery is M. V. Langston Roberts, who died in 1865,  wife of Stephen Roberts.  There are many graves that  would date back further, but over years the markings have been lost.  For the graves that are in the open area of the cemetery there are at least that many more  in the woods on the hillside that are unmarked.  The area  of the graves is covered in periwinkle, giving the effect of green carpet under the trees.   Many of the graves are children and it reminds us of the hardships our ancestors faced in early Jackson County. 

Because of the large number of unmarked graves we have checked the obituary index and included in the cemetery listings eleven names that the obituaries say are buried at Academy but for which we found no tombstone.  The text of the obituaries is included in the obituary files on this site.

 We would welcome any information to add others to this list whose graves are unmarked and would be glad to add stories of the church and its people.
