Ferguson, Mable Pritchett Graveside services for Mable Pritchett Ferguson, 87, of Demorest were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 27, at Crestlawn Memorial Park, Atlanta. The Rev. Dwight Adams and the Rev. Charles Taylor officiated. Mrs. Ferguson died Monday, June 24, 2002, at a private residence following an extended illness. Born in Habersham County on April 20, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Alvie Free Pritchett. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Terrell Ferguson; brothers, Jack Pritchett, M. L. Pritchett, Messer Pritchett; and sisters, Gladys Pritchett York and Bonnie Pritchett Church. Mrs. Ferguson was retired from Atlanta Finance Company and was a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church, Decatur. Survivors include her sister, Dorothy Pritchett York of Demorest; a number of nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Lois Heaton of Hollywood. Ferguson, Max Edward Funeral services for Max Edward Ferguson, 72, of Gainesville were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel. The Rev. Richard Scoggins officiated, with burial in Yonah Memorial Gardens. Mr. Ferguson died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at a private nursing home following an extended illness. Born in Habersham County on Sept. 7, 1930, he was the son of the late Edward and Georgia Hardy Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a graduate of Furman University and was employed by Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and General Tire and Rubber Company until 1947. He was co-founder of Atlanta Commercial Tire Inc. until he retired in 1986 to pursue other interests. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mary Julia Harvill Ferguson; daughter and son-in-law, David and Carol Ferguson Coy; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Mary Ferguson; sister-in-law; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Fowler, Pearl Kirkland TOCCOA – Graveside services for Pearl Kirkland Fowler, 91, of Toccoa will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 6, at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Evans and the Rev. Robert Thomas will officiate. Mrs. Fowler died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, S.C. Born in Webster County, Florida, on March 8, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Frances Roberts Kirkland. She lived in Stephens County most of her life and was retired from Coats & Clark with 32 years of service. She was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church and a member of the Dorcas Sunday School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Franklin Fowler who died in 1990. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Don Griffin of Clarkesville; son, Jimmy Fowler of Doraville; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Mattie Porter of Punta Gorda, Fla.; caretaker, Rozelle McCarter of Toccoa; sister-in-law, Ruby Kirkland of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Free, Mary Roach Funeral services for Mary Roach Free, 59, of Clarkesville were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at Hillside Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Ray Bohannon and the Rev. Paris Whitworth officiated with burial in Hollywood Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Free died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Born in Stephens County on Dec. 25, 1942, she was a daughter of the late Narvey and Myrtle Pressley Watkins. She lived most of her life in Habersham County and was a homemaker and a member of Hollywood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gene Roach; and brothers, Harold, Tommy and Joel Watkins. Fuller, Virginia Breen Virginia Breen Fuller, 72, of Clarkesville, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Habersham County Medical Center. Memorial services for Mrs. Fuller will be held at a later date. Born in Fulton County on Jan. 26, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Leo Joseph and Betty Stultz Breen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rex L. Fuller Jr.; daughter, Carol Fuller; and sister, Barbara Walters. Mrs. Fuller was a retired accounting clerk and was a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. Survivors include her daughters, Dianne Perpich of Cold Spring, N.Y., Victoria Fuller and Janice Fuller, both of Clarkesville; son, Mark B. Miss Gailey died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at her residence following a sudden illness. 1934- March 29 - Tri County Newspaper - Hon. Thomas J. Gastley Claimed By Death Wednesday Morning - End Comes Peaceful To Pioneer Resident of Habersham County Who Served???(Action in Confederate Army??) The entire community was saddened to learn of the passing of one of it oldest and most highly esteemed citizens, the Honorable Thomas Joseph Gastley, whose death occurred at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at his home near Clarkesville. Mr. Gastley had been in declining health for some time, and had been confined to his bed for the past fifteen weeks, and two weeks ago pneumonia developed, causing complications which resulted in his death Wednesday morning. Mr. Gastley was in his eighty-sixth ....July 29, 1848 at the ... Clarkesville. His parents.... America from Holland of the ..?? Jeruse..settled in ...passed away December .children were born..of whom are now..Baptist church ....attending school...outbreak of the war between the states ??....?? Course and as a ... years enlisted as a volunteer..confederate army, serving ....and later going into the regular army , where he served with distinction until the close of the war. Mr. Gastley's public service has been long and varied including positions of public responsibility, serving as Sheriff of Habersham County on different occasions for some eighteen years: in the State Legislature for four years from 1909 to 1912; he also served as Chairman of the Democratic Committee of Habersham County. He was an active member of the Clarkesville Lodge F and A Masons in which he has held the offices of Tyler, Junior Warden, Senior Warden, Worshipful Mater, and Treasurer and was also a trustee of the lodge. He had taken the Royal Arch degrees and held offices in Habersham chapter no, 77 R.A.M. He was also an Odd Fellow having first joined Baldwin Lodge in February 1902 and was a charter member of Clarkesville Lodge at the time it was constituted about twenty-five years ago. He was also prominent in church activities having been ordained as a deacon of Bethlehem Baptist Church on Mary 31, 1873 and had been superintendent of that Sunday school and trustee of the church for a number of years. He served as Moderator of Clarkesville Baptist Association for eight years and was a memeber of Hambersham County Singing Convention since 1878 and was president of that organization for forty six years. For years he and his sons have been successful in operating saw mills, grist mills and plaining mills in addition to their extensive agricultural pursuits in which Mr. Gastley continued to take an active part until the past year when his health began to gail to such a degree that he was unable to work. He possessed a lovable personality and had many friends throughout this county and section. During the last years of his long and useful life he was made inexpressibly happy when on his birthday each year, July 29, his children, grandchildren relatives and friends gathered at his home to do honor to this grand old man, and Christian gentleman, who was noted for his kindness and helpfulness to others. Mr. Gastley is survived by one daughter, Mrs A.A. Erwin of Habersham, Five sons, Messrs. T.R., J.H. and J.A. Gastley of Clarkesville, Charlie Gastley of Fairburn, Joseph Gastley of Seneca, S.C. also by a large number of grand children and great grand children. Funeral services were held today, Thursday, at Bethlehem Church, which was crowed to overflowing by sorrowing relatives and friends, from all sections of Habersham County assembled as their tribute to a beloved and venerated man. Mr. Gastley before his death had expressed his wishes in regard to his funeral which were carried out in the minutest detail, even to the musical selections. Rev. J.O. Fullbright, Rev. H.H. Humphries and Rev. T.C. Burrell read scriptures and offered prayers, and a number of friends paid tribute to Mr. Gastley's unimpeachable character and exemplary life. His five sons and one grand son acted as pallbearers. Members of Clarkesville Masonic Lodge were in charge of the impressive burial rites at the grave to which the body borne to its last resting place in a beautiful grey casket, made at Mr. Gastley request. Gibby, Roger D. Funeral services for Roger D. Gibby, 50, of Cornelia were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. The Rev. Gibson, W. Paul Sr. Funeral services for W. Paul Gibson Sr., 77, of Cornelia were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. Mike Portwood and David Terrell officiated, with burial in Yonah Memorial Gardens. Mr. Gibson died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center. Born in Fulton County on March 16, 1925, he was the son of the late Cleveland and Blanche Stevens Gibson. He was preceded in death by his twin sister, and a son, Kennon Gibson. Mr. Gibson was a graduate of Atlanta Christian College and was the owner of Cleveland Avenue Amoco. He was a member of Snellville Christian Church and was a part-time minister. He started the Forest Park Christian Church and was instrumental in starting Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, Gresham Park Christian Church and Roswell Christian Church, all in the Atlanta area. He served as chaplain at Stone Mountain Correctional Institute for several years. Born in Telfair County, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Omie Mae Cooper Scarbrough. She lived in Lula before moving to Twiggs County. The widow of George H. Gilder, she was a retired machine operator with Keebler. Mrs. Gilder was a member of the Lula Garden Club and was a member of Mt. Gorr, Earl J. Jr. Private funeral arrangements for Earl J. Gorr Jr., 67, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., were completed as per deceaseds last wish. Mr. Gorr died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Mr. Gorr was the son of Lillian Abenes, and brother of Russell E. Gorr and Kenneth J. Gorr of Demorest. OBITUARY / Clarkesville, Georgia / Thursday, September 19, 1935 / Funeral Services For Captain Noel Grant Held Here Saturday -- Funeral services were held at four o'clock Saturday afternoon, September 14, for Captain Noel W. Grant, prominent retired United States Naval officer, a former resident of Clarkesville, who died Friday morning at the Mountain View hotel, where he had come several days previously, with his wife from their home near Clayton. In accord with his wishes the service was simple and lacking in ostentation, being conducted by Rev. J. B. Smith, pastor of the Methodist church and attended by a large gathering of sympathetic friends and relatives of the deceased. The casket, draped with an American flag in recognition of his service in the navy, was borne by a group of life-long friends to its resting place beside his parents in the old cemetery at Clarkesville. Church and Son, funeral directors were in charge of arrangements. Captain Grant was born in Clarkesville in 1878, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William D. Grant, well-known residents of this community. He spent his boyhood and received his education at Clarkesville, and later attended North Georgia College, at Dahlonega, being an honor student of the latter institution. He represented Dahlonega in a state-wide oratorical contest in 1902, winning first place over a number of other contestants from leading Georgia colleges and universities. After his graduation from Dahlonega he received his commission in the United States Navy, in which service he remained for thirty-one years. During his service he was stationed on several of the lage [sic] vessels of the U.S. Navy, and was assigned to Naval Stations both on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. He was stationed at Charleston, S.C., when he retired from the service in 1934 to his home near Clayton, Ga. He and Mrs. Grant spent several months here last spring, and have many friends who learn with genuine regret of his passing. He was a Mason and a member of the Methodist church. Captain Grant is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rose Grant; by one sister, Mrs. J. C. Hood, of Cornelia; by one brother, Mr. Asa Grant, of Seneca, S.C.; and by a number of nieces and nephews. W. D. Grant / After an Illness of Only a Few Hours One of
this City's Beloved Mothers Passed Away Sunday -- Sunday
morning about 11 o'clock Mrs. Samantha Jane Grant, wife of
Mr. W. D. Grant, was stricken with an attack of acute
indigestion and for several hours it seemed that death was
inevitable but she rallied and it was thought her condition
was much better, but a second attack came and in a few
minutes she had passed away, death occurring at 6:30 o'clock
Sunday afternoon, October 4th. Mrs. Grant was born at
Belton, Anderson county, S.C., May 12th, 1842, being at the
time of her death in her 73rd year. She was a daughter of
John and Elizabeth Holland. She married to Mr. Grant on
Dec. 28, 1860, coming to Clarkesville as a bride, where she
resided until her death. Mrs. Grant was the mother of 12
children, ten of whom survive her. They are: A. P. Grant,
Seneca, S.C.; T. L. Grant, Atlanta; J. S. Grant, Bostwick;
J. W. Grant, Welleston, Okla.; Capt. J. H. Grant, Oklahoma
City, Okla.; J. R. Grant, Hazelhurst, N. W. Grant,
lieutenant commander of the U.S.S. Delaware, stationed at
Vera Cruz, Mexico; Mrs. Max Holtz, Atlanta; Mrs. J. C. Hood,
Nacoochee; Mrs. H. K. Wood, Clarkesville. All came for the
funeral but two sons, N. W. Grant, who could [sic] reach
here in time, and Capt. Grant, who is sick at his home.
Mrs. Hubert Nelson, a granddaughter, of Florence, S.C., and
other grand and great grandchildren attended the funeral.
There are 65 lineal descendents, seven of whom are
great-grandchildren, that survive her, besides her husband,
who is 77 years of age. She was a member of Bethlehem
Baptist Church being a consecrated member of her church.
She was a woman beloved by all who knew her. Hers was a
life of service and usefulness to those near and dear to
her, and truly it can be said of her that a "Mother in
Israel" has passed away. Mrs. Grant was very fond of
flowers, especially the old time ones, and her casket was
laden with many of her favorite flowers, the offering being
many from her large circle of friends. The funeral will be
held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the residence and
the interment will be in the old cemetery in this city, Rev.
J. W. Kytle, of this city officiating.

morbus, at 6:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Funeral
arrangements will not be announced until a message is
received from one of her sons, N. W. Grant, lieuteuant
commander of the U.S.S. Delaware, stationed at Vera Cruz.
Mrs. Grant had reached the age of 72. She was the mother of
twelve children, ten of whom survive her, as follows: J. W.
Grant, Seneca, S.C.; T. L. Grant, Atlanta; J. H. Grant,
Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. H. K. Wood, Clarkesville; Mrs. J.
C. Hood, Nacoochee; James R. Grant, Hazelhurst; N. W. Grant,
in the government service; J. S. Grant, Bostwick; Mrs. Max
Holtz, Atlanta, and C. E. Grant, Montana. Mrs. Grant is
also survived by her husband, who is himself 77 years of
age. Mr. and Mrs. Grant have been residents of Clarkesville

Green, Max Jefferson Funeral services for Max Jefferson Green, 85, of Cornelia were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel. Dr. Mark Weaver and Dr. T. Logan Smith officiated with burial at 2 p.m. in Alta Vista Cemetery, Gainesville. Mr. Green died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at a private nursing home following an extended illness. Born in Jackson County on July 31, 1916, he was the son of the late William Edgar and Beulah Peeler Green. He was preceded in death by his grandsons, Jeff Green and Kevin Green. Mr. Green attended high school in Pacolet, S.C., and Commerce. He majored in textile engineering at Clemson University and taught textile math and manufacturing at Gainesville Mills while working as Quality Control technician, Personnel and Safety director, office manager, assistant secretary and treasurer. He joined Chicopee Lumite Division in 1946 with the following jobs: office manager and purchasing agent for Buford and Cornelia, manager of shade fabrics and national sales manager. Mr. Green was owner and operator of Farm Supply Company of Cornelia for 11 years. He retired in 1976 to spend more time enjoying his favorite hobby, golf. He played regularly for 63 years and retired from playing at the age of 82 due to health problems. Mr. Green was a member of the Kiwanis Club and was Scoutmaster of the Kiwanis Club Troop. He was a member and chairman of the Youth Committee Chamber of Commerce and was the county Heart Fund Drive chairman. Mr. Green was a Mason and Shriner, and a member of Cornelia Lodge No. 92 F&AM. He joined Cornelia First Baptist Church in 1947. There he served as Sunday School teacher and director. He was also the Brotherhood president, trustee and Board of Deacons chairman and was a Training Union director at the church. Survivors include his wife, Claudine Dink Lenderman Green of Cornelia; daughters, Sandra Elrod of Marietta, Nancy Chandler of Cornelia; son, Randall Bud Green of Lula; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Green, Nannette Dial PERRY – Funeral services for Nannette Dial Green, 88, of Cornelia were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, at Perry United Methodist Church. The Rev. Billy Key officiated. Burial was in Memory Hill Cemetery in Milledgeville, with the Rev. Wayne Smith officiating at graveside. Mrs. Green died Monday, June 16, 2003, following an extended illness. A former resident of Perry for more than 50 years, Mrs. Green had resided for the past seven years in Cornelia under the care of her sister, Carleen Ruark. Mrs. Green was born in Athens on May 24, 1915, the daughter of the late Carl V. and Mary Blanche Malcolm Dial. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Yates Green; sister, Jessie Logan; and brother-in-law, James F. Logan. She received her education in Winterville and Athens. Mrs. Green was named Woman of the Year in 1968 and her husband was named Man of the Year in 1969 by Perry civic groups. At the time, they were the only married couple to have received these honors. They came to be known as “Mr. and Mrs. Perry.” They were former owners and operators of The New Perry Hotel and the Quality Inn Motel. She touched many lives by her generosity and Southern hospitality. Mrs. Green was a member of Perry United Methodist Church and Sunday school for 50 years. She was a member of several civic, tourism and travel associations for many years. For the past several years, she was a member of Cornelia United Methodist Church. Head, Tom Funeral services for Tom Head, 82, of Clarkesville were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Cornelius E. Church Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. The Rev. David B. Turner officiated, with burial in the family lot of Clarkesville Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Head died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Banks-Jackson-Commerce Hospital, Commerce. Born in Clermont, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. For his service, he received the EAMET Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and Purple Heart. Mr. Head was a resident of Clarkesville for more than 60 years, where he and his late wife, Fannie Church Head, owned and operated Clarkesville Furniture Company and Custom Corner Ceramics. He was a former member of the Clarkesville Housing Authority and the Clarkesville Industrial Authority for a number of years. He was a member of Clarkesville Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years, was a former music director, choir member and was called upon to do a great deal of musical solos over the years. He was a former member of the board of trustees and was a former assistant organist. Mr. Head was a highly respected licensed funeral director in Georgia and was associated for a number of years with Church and Son Funeral Home. In addition to his wife, Mr. Head was preceded in death by his son, Edward Head. Houston, John Lawrence Funeral services for John Lawrence Houston, 71, of Cornelia were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeff Ayers and the Rev. Tracy Davidson officiated, with burial in Fairfield Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Houston died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Born in Dexter, Kan., on May 7, 1931, Mr. Houston was an iron worker and of the Methodist faith. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Wright Houston of Cornelia; daughters, Becky Jordan, Nancy Houston, Judy Houston, all of Wichita, Kan., Stephanie Owens of Washington; son, Scott Houston of Wichita, Kan.; stepchildren, Leyta Wortman, Betty Brown, Julia Brown, Leo Brown, Eugene Brown, all of Wichita, Kan.; sister, Fay Kurly of Washington; 11 grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren. Hulsey, Linda Grace CLEVELAND – Funeral services for Linda Grace Hulsey, 55, of Cleveland, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Alexander’s Gateway Chapel Funeral Home. The Rev. Chris Anderson and John Anderson will officiate, with burial in Gateway Memory Park. Mrs. Hulsey died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Born in White County, she was a lifelong resident. Mrs. Hulsey was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church and attended White County schools. She was preceded in death by her father, Lester Anderson. Ivie, Boyd CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Inurnment for Boyd Ivie, 86, of Cathedral City, Calif., was held at Tranquility Falls Palm Springs Mausoleum. Mr. Ivie died Jan. 4, 2003. Born on Nov. 22, 1916, he was the son of Bayless E. and Maude B. Caudell Ivie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Lee Dodd. Mr. Ivie was a heavy equipment mechanic for 28 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1944 to 1945. Survivors include his son, James Ivie of Cathedral City, Calif.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Eugenia Brown of Cornelia; and numerous relatives.
