Paul Gwin (1893-1918) was killed in World War I and is buried at Sugar Valley. Post No. 47 of the American Legion, located in Calhoun, is named in his honor.

Postcard, 1914-1919. Delbert L. Murphy (left) and J. G. Pye (right) pose for a photograph in their uniforms and in front of their tent during World War I. Murphy was later killed in action and Pye was wounded in the arm. The men were at Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 9th United States Infantry.
