November 12, 1825 - The Cherokee Council adopted a
resolution to make New Echota the capital of the Cherokee Nation.
1825 - 1838 - New
Echota was the political headquarters for the Indian Nation.
New Echota was the final capital of the
remnants of the Indian Nation that had at one time covered all of northern
Georgia, western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and northwestern
Alabama. It was at
New Echota that the Cherokee developed a written form of their native
language. They developed a national press and began printing the
Cherokee Phoenix newspaper in both Cherokee and English.
It was from New Echota that the Cherokee were
removed westward on the Trial of Tears in 1838-1839. Understanding the
history of New Echota helps us understand the series of events that lead
to the Trail of Tears.
The story of New Echota is a story of triumph
