Baker Charles Dowman came from London (England( with his family about the year 1855, lived in the little town of Atlanta,GA about two years, and then bought and moved his family to the James Turner place near Wesley Cahpel Church, Fairburn Rd., S Fulton County, Ben Hill, GA He was an active member of Wesley Chapel Church until 1873 when he moved near Mt. Gilead Methodist Church and soon became superintendent of Sunday School. Both he and his wife were excellent Bible scholars and were active workers in Mount Gilead Methodist Church until their removal from the community to Edgewood, GA in 1883. Mr. Dowman devoted much of his time to general Sunday School work, visiting throughout his immediate section and often made lectures to them. He also officiated at many burials, his funeral service proving of much comfort to the bereaved and the great good of his hearers. He raised a large family of five (5) sons and four (4) daughters. One of his sons, Charles E. was licensed to preach from Wesley Chapel Church about 1868. He was a graduate of Emory College and later became President of that institution, and a prominent member of the North GA Conference. He died in 1914, and is buried at Oxford, Newton County, GA. The four (4) remaining Dowman boys are J. W., Henry, George and Albert, all of whom became consecrated Christian men and earnest workers in the church. Of the Dowman girls, only one survives. Fannie, who married J. L. Suber and lives near Owl Rock Church, to which she and her family belong. Charles Dowman Sr. and wife are buried at Mount Gilead Methodist Church, Fairburn Rd., S Fulton County, Ben Hill, GA Grave Marker reads: Charles Dowman 6 Aug 1821 England 19 Sept 1905 Anna W Dowman 2 Feb 1826 17 Nov 1906. Wesley Chapel mentioned above is not Ben Hill United Methodist Church. Year 2003
