Nuckolls, A.B.

The Baptist Leader, August 6, 1891

Rev. A.B. Nuckolls of Whitfield County was born about 1835.

His father, Alexander Nuckolls, came from Virginia and settled in thiscounty among the first settlers.

He was a noted man for his firmness and upright character. He was blessedwith much property and A.B., being his favorite son, he gave him a splendidEnglish education.

His father expected him to practice law, but he chose preaching the gospelof Jesus Christ, or rather it chose him. He was ordained to the ministryin the year 1862, and for many years he preached for but little or nocompensation. He used to tell of preaching at a certain church for five yearsfor a pen of shucks. Brother Nuckolls was a well-doing man, financially, and perhaps the brethren thought he did not need much help.

Brother N. served Beaver Ruin Church in Forsyth County, which was nearhis residence, for several years as pastor, and baptized near 70 personsinto the fellowship of that church.

He also served Flat Creek, Hall County; Providence, Milton County; andFriendship, Forsyth County, and other churches---the first named about threeyears.

Ernest was a good boy, of noble character, having all the virtues ofhonesty, love, self-sacrifice and devotion to his sisters and home, and wasloved by all who knew him.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church; was baptized by Rev. HenryWarren September, 1916, and left evidence that his call from service andbattles all o’er the victory was “He that overcometh shall inheritall things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.”

In the death of Phoebe Samples, nee Fincher, on the 5th of February...

Phoebe [Fincher] Samples was a small girl when her parents moved fromNorth Carolina and settled near where the City of Buford now stands. It washere that she married Jesse Samples, Rev. Silas King officiating, about 75years ago.

From Gwinnett County, Jesse Samples moved to Forsyth County, Georgia, and lived a short time, and then to Cobb County, settling in Forsyth about1833, at the place where Dr. H.P. Riden now lives. Soon after this they removedto the place of her death, three miles east of Cumming, where she has livedabout 63 years.

They fought the battle of life nobly, and by energy and industry hadaccumulated considerable property when the War Between the States freed theirNegroes and other property. They raised a family of nine children---fiveboys and four girls. Over half of them have preceded her to the better land.J.V Samples of Birmingham, Alabama, Mrs. Aminta Hall of Wylam, Alabama, andMrs. John Edmondson and Mrs. Amaltha Crain of Cumming still survive her.

Her husband died in 1868, over 32 years ago, and left her to battle alonein this unfriendly world. But most faithfully she has performed her dutyand never ceased to work and manage as long as she was blessed with healthand strength, which failed her a few years ago.

Granny Samples possessed many noble traits of character...She was fora long time a devoted member of the M.E. church...Her membership was withthe Cumming church...

She was buried at the family burying ground near her home, Rev. Mr. Lesterof Cumming M.E. Church preaching the funeral...

[Born 9-15-1810; died 2-5-1901; buried at Corinth.]

Tatum, A.L.

The Forsyth County News, May 1, 1924

On April 18 a telegram arrived here that A.L. Tatum of Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, had been killed. A message was returned in regard to the burial of his body, and a request made for the particulars of his death.

Mr. Tatum was a son of Mr. and Mrs. F.D. Tatum and has many friends herewho will be interested to know how he has made other friends in Oklahoma, where he has lived for about 30 years. So we give the letter, as writtenby Dr. Walker.

Dear Mr. Pierce:

Your message asking for particulars concerning the death of A.L. Tatumreceived. Perhaps you know more about Mr. Tatum’s family troubles thananyone here knows, for he was never inclined to speak very much about histroubles.

But we know that the 12 years Mr. Tatum lived in Lone Wolf, his homelife was very unhappy. His wife was one of the kind that, when Mr. Tatumhad money, she would live with him until she got it all, then she would drivehim away. And since conditions have been as they have for three years, Mr.Tatum, like lots of others, had not made so much. About a year ago Mrs. Tatumwas granted a divorce. Mr. Tatum did not try to fight it but allowed Mrs.Tatum to keep the farm and all the property. He moved to town and went inthe Sewing Machine business. They had three children and a father could nothave been better to children than he was to them.

When they came in to school, he saw that they had everything they neededor wanted. He worshipped his children.

Of course everyone who knows about the trouble sympathizes with Mr. Tatum.I can truthfully say that a man never lived in our town that had as manyfriends...

On April 17, Mr. Tatum went to the school house here to a program andas he came down the steps from the auditorium, Mrs. Tatum had hid in oneof the lower halls, and as he passed by she began to shoot, and every shotentered his body. As I am a doctor, I was called at once. He lived only afew minutes. She shot him five times with a 38 automatic...

Everyone was and is in sympathy with Mr. Tatum, and all wishing for Mrs.Tatum to get the limit. It was a premeditated, cold-blooded murder. Mrs.Tatum in is jail. They will have her preliminary trial next week.

All the very best people are going and we expect to use our influenceto get her just what she should have. If no one can care for the children, they will be carried to our State Home...

Terry, John W.

The Forsyth County News, August 1, 1919

In loving memory of John W. Terry, who departed this life March 23,1919.

From all accounts he calmly and patiently bore his sickness. It seemshe gradually weakened away until death moved him to the great beyond, webelieve where there will be no more death nor sorrow to molest or make usafraid. He joined the Baptist church at Union Hill in August, 1865, movedhis membership to Sharon Church, and lived a very consistent membership forseveral years, when a rule was drawn in the church called an assessment,to which he said he could not agree and suffered the church to exclude him. While the writer of this and probably the church or they that knew him doesnot doubt his true and genuine religion, for he did love to talk about thereligion of our blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It seemed that it buriedhim up to the very depth of his soul to talk about that world beyond thegrave. Oh, the writer has spent so many happy hours in his company and withhim, for he came to see me in my affliction as long as he was able.

He was about 70 years old.
