Hawkins, Rev. F.M.

Baptist Leader, August 27, 1891

The sad news of the death of the Rev. F.M. Hawkins last night at hishome two miles west of town reached us this morning. He had for many yearsbattled with disease and used various kinds of medicines for relief, butwithout the desired effect.

For several years he had not been able to preach much and none sinceabout a year ago at Friendship Church...a short talk.

He loved to preach the gospel of Christ, and few, if any, ministers couldpreach as logical, especially on the deep doctrines of the Bible. He, likePaul, would endure all things that he might win souls to Christ. He was verypoorly compensated for his services, yet he preached Christ without murmuring. In his work for the Master he often went on foot many miles to his churches, generally supplying four at a time.

He gave as much as half his time, when able, to his farm, and therebyprovided for those dependent on him for support. He has raised a large family;all married but one.

He was born in West Tennessee December 6, 1811, moved to Georgia in 1836,and settled soon after where he resided at his death.

His labors have ended and henceforth there is a crown for him at theright hand of God.

His remains will be entered tomorrow at Friendship Church where hismembership has been since he moved to this section. The Masonic order willtake charge of the body.

Hockenhull, Dr. John H.

The Forsyth County News, November 23, 1922

Dr. John H, Hockenhull, one of the most widely known and best lovedphysicians of this section died at his home in Cumming Sunday afternoon at3 o’clock, and his remains were laid to rest in the cemetery here Tuesdaymorning at 11 o’clock, after funeral services conducted by Rev. JamesH. Eakes, a school mate and boyhood friend of the deceased.

Dr. John, as he was familiarly known to practically every citizen ofForsyth County, was a fine physician, and an honor to the medicalprofession.

He began the practice of medicine here some 35 years ago, before buggieswere popular with the people, going on horseback to see the poor and therich alike, studying his profession and the relieving of suffering humanitymore than money, and made thousands of friends who have stuck to him throughthe journey of life and wept over his bier at the grave.

Another evidence of the love and esteem in which he was held by thosewho knew him was the beautiful floral offerings that were sent by lovingand sorrowing friends and placed about his grave. It was the largest evershowered upon the grave of anyone buried in the cemetery here.

He will be greatly missed by all, but especially by the poor for noneever went to Dr. John for medical assistance but that it was cheerfullyrendered.

Truly it can be said of him, as it was of our Lord when He was here amongmen: “He went about doing good.”

He is survived by his wife, three brothers, two sisters, and a host ofother relatives and friends to whom the News extends its deepest sympathyin their sad hour of bereavement.

The Forsyth County News, November 30, 1922

In the death of Dr. Hockenhull, his family, his friends, and the countrysustain a loss. There is not another to take his place. To me his passingaway is an irreparable loss and a distinct blow. He was my friend: I washis. Our friendship dates back more than 40 years, when we were both youngmen. In all my experience with mankind, I never knew a better man. His removalfrom the earth’s activities is a great loss to the people of ForsythCounty, especially the poor, many of whom were the beneficiaries of his kindheart and tender mercies. He had, in his useful life, relieved the sufferingof thousands, and yet he was a great sufferer himself in the last few daysof his life, but without complaint he bore it like a man. His life is anobject lesson to all and he was loved and cherished by all who knew him.His love for his family bore eloquent testimony of the great heart that dweltwithin him. He was gentle, kind, and considerate to the most humble who chancedto come in contact with him. His great soul has passed to the Great Beyond, but in passing has left a radiance that will be as a beacon light to thosewho follow.

Hornady, Dr. Henry Carr

The Baptist Leader, April 6, 1893

Dr. Henry Carr Hornady was born in Jones County, Georgia on the 22ndof February, 1822. He was the son of Isaac Hornady, a man of sterling character, and of Lavinia Hornady, whose maiden mane was Robinson, a lady of markedpiety and of many brilliant personal accomplishments.

From his earliest boyhood Dr. Hornady was familiar with his genealogy. He was well acquainted with the names and characteristics of his ancestors, and took a special fancy in tracing his lineage as far back as possible. He was a lineal descendent of one of the Roundheads, who distinguished himselffor his valor as one of the followers of Oliver Cromwell in the battle ofMarston Moore.

The early education of Dr. Hornady was derived from his native county. He manifested at a very early age a marked predilection for the ministry, and his studies were largely directed toward that end. He was passionatelyfond of reading and devoured with eager interest everything upon which hecould lay his hands. This wonderful spirit of acquisitiveness soon gave tohim a varied information and a knowledge of men and things far beyond therange of any of his associates.

For his rudimentary education, he was very largely indebted to Mr. ZachairhHarmon and to Mr. David Dumas, school masters of the adjoining county.Subsequently he became a pupil of professor Whatley, one of the most prominenteducators of that section, from which his zeal for learning acquired a freshinspiration. As soon as he had gained sufficient instruction to battle withthe world, he began himself “to teach the young idea how toshoot.”

He was converted in 1843 at the age of 21...

She was a close reader of her Bible, she wouldcommit to memory verses, paragraphs, and even whole chapters of scripture, and she always had a scripture quotation ready for any and all occasions. She was a literary teacher by profession, having been educated at Mary SharpeCollege, Tennessee. She was a thorough scholar.

Liberty Church had the misfortune to get the church-house burned down;sister Julian, sister Annetta Porter, and sister Ann Townsend did such proficientwork in collecting funds with which to rebuild that the church in conferenceordered a blank page set apart in appreciation of said labor. As the sistersare all dead, we think this a suitable time to make mention of said facts.

Kemp, Thomas M.

The North Georgian, March 21, 1902

With regret we read your notice last week of the death of Thomas M. Kempof Lumpkin County. Among the first young men we remember was Tom Kemp, whosefather, Solomon Kemp, lived near us. His mother was a Kile, sister of ThomasKile, one of the first settlers of Atlanta, Georgia, from whom the noted“Kile Corner” on Peachtree and Marietta streets took its name.Mr. Kile went from Gwinnett County to the city, and another brother, GainesKile, was associated with him. There are many relatives of the Kile familyof Gwinnett County in Forsyth County, and there are several of the Kemp familyin this section, as there were nine brothers and four sisters of the family.Mr. T.M. Kemp married Phoebe Fincher, daughter of William Fincher, Esq.,formerly of Forsyth County, shortly before the Civil War (1861) and leavesher to mourn her loss, and several children, relatives and friends.

Mr. Kemp was about 65 or 70 years of age and was born and raised in ForsythCounty, where he remained until 1882, with the exception of two years(1870-1871), he lived in Texas. He and his family were among the large crowdof emigrants that left Forsyth County for Texas in the fall of 1869. Whilein that country we visited Mr. Kemp on the Brasos River in Hill County andfound him “chilling,” something too common out there in thosedays.

Mr. Kemp served in the Civil War in the 43rd Regiment, Georgia Volunteers, and was associated with Col. Kellogg most of the time.

In January, 1882, he removed with his family near Canton, Georgia, andremained there several years, and thence to the place of his death, abouthalfway between Gainesville and Dahlonega. He was a member of the Methodistchurch, good farmer, honest and hard working, clever and kind to all andwithout a spot on his character. His death was sudden---being found deadin bed after eating a hearty supper. His mother, who died in 1873, died inthe same manner. His remains were interred in the cemetery where he lived.

Lester, Attorney-General George N.

Newspaper and date unknown

Attorney-General George N. Lester is dead.

He died at his home near Marietta last Wednesday night at nineo’clock.

This distinguished lawyer, jurist, soldier, and statesman is no more. His death is a sad loss to the state he loved so well, and to whose intereststhe best years of his life were devoted with unfaltering zeal and fidelity.

A man of great brain, legal learnings, unflinching devotion to rightand unsurpassed loyalty to the principles of true democracy, his death atthis time is almost a calamity.

Judge Lester ranked amongst the most distinguished of Georgia’smany noble sons. Cradled in adversity, from early youth until stricken down,he maintained an unquestioning loyalty to principal and duty; and in thecouncils of the state and church, and at the bar, he has always been a prominentfigure. A native Georgian, he loved the state of his birth with a devotionrarely equaled and never surpassed.

He had filled many offices of honor and distinction, and in all of themillustrated signal ability and attachment to duty.

In October, 1890, he was elected Attorney-General. About three monthsthereafter he was stricken with paralysis and for 15 months has been in ahelpless condition, but until Thursday last was in full possession of hismental faculties.

On last Thursday he lost consciousness and remained in an unconsciouscondition until last Wednesday night at 9 o’clock, when he quietly breathedhis last.

Few men could have withstood so long and so patiently the inevitableresult of his paralytic stroke, but he was a man of remarkable physique, and notwithstanding he had lost his right arm in defense of his country atthe battle of Perryville. He had always maintained a remarkable vigor, andwas always a perfect specimen of health. Thus it was that he was able todo battle during 15 weary months...

He received a liberal education for his day, and enteredthe legal profession, which he pursued successfully until the call to armsin 1861, when he raised a splendid company of volunteers and was electedcaptain. He served four years in the Armyof Northern Virginia, being promoted by regular gradations from captain tocolonel, and was in command of the Fourteenth Georgia Regiment at the surrenderat Appomattox on April 9, 1865.

He leaves four children as follows: J.G. Lester and R.P. Lester, Jr.of Covington; Mrs. J.H. Eakes of Augusta; and Mrs. C.C. Foster of Roswell.

Col. Lester was a gallant Confederate soldier; was prominent in Masoniccircles, being a high priest of his chapter and worshipful master of hissubordinate lodge; and for 50 years he was a consistent member of the Methodistchurch---his most prominent trait of character being his strong, but simplefaith in the loving kindness of the Savior.

He was highly esteemed and beloved by everyone who knew him for his genialand pleasant companionship.

Col. Lester was never a candidate for any office, but took a deep interestin public affairs and always took a decided stand on the right side of allquestions of public interest.
