Mrs. Nichols

Mrs. Leona Nichols, 69, Spring Creek Community, Rome, Rt. 4, died Monday evening in a Rome hospital following several years declining health. Her condition had become critical two weeks ago.
She was born in Floyd County April 29, 1907, daughter of the late Joseph Eli Branton and Amanda Locklear Branton. She had resided her entire life in Rome and Floyd County, and was a member of Spring Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Carl Nichols, Taylorsville; four daughters, Mrs. Herman Shelley, Mrs. Herschel Mormon, Mrs. Lonnie Barker, Mrs. Robert Highfield, Rome; one brother, Clarence Branton, Rome; two sisters, Mrs. Aline Gresham, Rome and Mrs. W.A. Johnson, Kingston; one half brother, Monroe Branton, Silver Creek; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Spring Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Paul Willis, Willard Willis and Jack Chandler officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home and at other hours will be at the residence of a daughter, Mrs. Lonnie Barker, Spring Creek.
Grandsons serving as pall bearers will be Tony Nichols, Wayne and James Shelley, Joe and Jackie Highfield, and Larry Mormon.
The body will lie in state in the church from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Jennings Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
