FANNIN COUNTY
Fannin County, Georgia's 106th County, was formed January 21, 1854. It was
named in honor of James Walker Fannin, a native Georgian who was a hero in
Texas' war of Independence from Mexico.
The first County Seat was Morganton but, after the railroad entered the County
in the late 1800s, it was moved to Blue Ridge in 1895.
Fannin County comprises 390.3 square miles, 106,000 acres (42%) of which is in
the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Cohutta Wilderness Area.
The Cohutta Wilderness Area is the largest Wilderness Area east of the
Mississippi.
Blue Ridge Reservoir, a 3,
290 acre TVA lake, provides recreation, flood control and can produce 22,000
kilowatts of electricity. The dam, completed in 1930, crosses the Toccoa river
1,000 feet in length and 167 feet high, backing the water 11 miles with over
100 miles of shoreline.
