Houses of Heart Pine -- A Survey of the Antebellum Architecture of Evans County, GA

Col. (Ret) Pharris Johnson has completed a well-documented architectural survey of the county's antebellum houses that is now available in book form. His book starts with a review of the prevalent antebellum architectural types in the county and traces their origin to the Mid-Atlantic states. The next chapter is a review of building practices in Bulloch and Tattnall counties. The remaining chapters cover the nine antebellum houses found in the county. These include the A. D. Eason House in Undine; the Smith-Daniel House in Bellville; the B. B. Brewton House in Bellville; the Brewton-Hendrix House on Hwy. 129 north; the Edwards-Strickland House east of Daisy; the Thomas A. Durrence House off of 301 south; the Simon J. Brewton House on Hwy. 301 north; the John Rogers House off Hwy. 129 south; and the Thomas Rogers House off Hwy. 129 south.

The book includes measured floor plans, results of extensive documentary research, and 229 illustrations. The book, published under the auspices of the Evans County Historical Society, is available at the Anderson House Restaurant in Bellville for $22 or by ordering it form Johnson at 114 Nelson Ave. Savannah, Ga. 31408. The 179-softcover book is $24.95 (tax and postage included).

A fully indexed book with historical maps and a historic account of the land as it was settled and developed into present day Evans County.  It provides historic and photographs information on communities, churches, schools, businesses, and citizens.  Cemetery records for the county are included.
