KINGSTREE, SC---Services for Norma Belle McGee Dukes, 102, will
be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel
with burial in Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-8 this evening at the funeral
home. Memorials may be made to the Mount Vernon U. M. C.
Mrs. Dukes died Thursday, June
1, 2000 in PALATKA, FL. Born in WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, she was
the daughter of the late Glenn McGee & Annie Bell Gray McGee.
She was a retired salesperson & a homemaker. Mrs. Dukes was
a Baptist.
Surviving are her daughters, Mrs.
Harriett D. Hill of MONCKS CORNER, SC, Mrs. Alliene Millians
of EAST PALATKA, FL; son, F. Aulden Dukes of TUCKER, GA; 7 grandchildren;
6 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Mrs. Holmes, of 115 Creekwood Park
Drive, died Friday, May 5, 2000 at her home. A native of Spartanburg,
she was the daughter of the late Walter Neal & Zula Beidleman
Willis of Spartanburg. She was a former cermics instructor for
the City of Spartanburg. As a charter member of St. John's Lutheran
Church, she was involved in many aspects of the church that included
Circle #2 & the tape ministry for shut-ins. Giny enjoyed
volunteer work at The Charles Lea Center, was active in gardening,
golf, art, as well as civic & community affairs. She was
past president of the Women's Golf Association at the Spartanburg
Country Club, & at age 84, had her 1st & only 'hole in
one.' In 1996, she was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Award
by the Spartanburg Development Council.
Surviving are her husband of 61
years, Ross M. Holmes Sr; son & daughter-in-law, Ross Jr.
& Happy Holmes of Columbia; sons, James F. Holmes of Atlanta,
GA, David M. Holmes of Charlotte, NC; sister, Mary Willis Keller
of Plant City, FL; grandchildren, Elizabeth P. Holmes, Melissa
R. Holmes, Fletcher F. Holmes, Cooper J. Holmes.

Obituary of Thomas Johnson b. 1 Aug 1830, d 23 Jan 1888. Son
of Andrew Johnson, former Mayor and owner of Stone Mountain,
husband of Virginia Eugenia Emerson. Severely injured in the
Civil War. Buried at Macedonia Baptist Church in Lithonia.
Died on the morning of the 23d
instant, Mr. Thomas Johnson of Dekalb County from an overdose
of morphine sulphur, administered by himself to relieve restlessness.
He was reared in DeKalb County and was 58 years of age. He leaves
a wife and eight children.

Edwin D. Mitchell, 71, retired railroad engineer, died Friday
night at his home 224 Greenwood Cir., Decatur.
He was an engineer for Seaboard Airline Railroad before his retirement
in 1940. He had been in railroading about 48 years and with Seaboard
about 30.
A native of Randolph County, Ala. he had lived in the Atlanta
area about 36 years.
He was a member of the Decatur First Baptist Church and the Odd
Fellows. He was also a member of the National Assn of Retired
and Veteran Railroad Employees, Unit 39, and an honorary lifetime
member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Essie Bryan; three
sons Lt. Col. Bryan B. Mitchell, USMC, Quantico, Va; Edwin T.
Mitchell, New Orleans, La; William S. Mitchell, Chamblee, and
three daughters, Mrs. Winfred Burrell, Rensalear, Ind., and Mrs.
R. J. Haban and Miss Elizabeth Mitchell, Decatur.

Mrs. Sarah S. Dempsey, age 94, of Hiawassee, Georgia, passed
away Sunday, February 27, 2000 in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home
in Hiawassee, Georgia.
Mrs. Dempsey was a native of Dekalb
County, GA and moved to Hiawassee in 1964. She was the Church
Organist at Clarkston Baptist Church; and at McConnell Memorial
Baptist Church in Hiawassee for many years.
She is predeceased by her husband,
Fred T. Dempsey, and by a son, Lawrence Dempsey of Oxford, Mississippi.
She is survived by a son Charles
Dempsey and his wife Jeanne of Stone Mountain, GA; daughter-in-law,
Susan Dempsey of Oxford, MI; brother, Clifford Singleton of Charleston
SC; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Wednesday,,
March 1, 2000 at 11 am in Mellwood Cemetery in Stone Mountain,
GA with Dr. B.J. Bennett of Clarkston Baptist Church officiating.

For Many Years A Pastor in Hunt County - Tribute By Presiding
Elder
Regarding the life and character
of Rev. W. L. Clifton, who died at St. Paul's hospital, in Dallas,
last Sunday, as the result of an operation for gall stone, Presiding
Elder Mood pays the following tribute:
Brother Clifton has been translated:
The news of the death of his veteran of the Cross will be heard
with sorrow in many hearts throughout the county, but with the
assurance that his death is but his triumph. Rev. W. L. Clifton
was born in De Kalb county, Ga., April 26, 1836. When he was
two years of age his parents moved from Georgia settling in Northeast
Alabama, where he grew to manhood on the farm.
He was converted and joined the
Methodist Episcopal Church South in August 1855. He was soon
after made class leader and Steward in his church, in which capacity
he served with fidelity until he entered the ministry.
He was licensed to preach May 6th
1857 and admitted on trial into the Alabama Conference in 1860.
During the war he was Chaplain in the Confederate army and was
in labors abundant and always spoke with pleasure of the success
attending his labors with the soldiers.
He was ordained deacon by Bishop
W. W. Wightman in 1866 and ordained elder by the same bishop
in 1867. He labored for a number of years in the Alabama and
Montgomery Conferences with equal fidelity and success on Missions,
Circuits, Stations, or Districts.
In 1883 he was transferred to the
North Texas Conference, where he lived, labored and was loved
and honored and from which body he was called home.
He was married January 10, 1866
to Miss Laura Bowers and to this union 7 children, 5 of whom,
with his faithful wife, live to mourn his departure. Baptized
in infancy, his whole life was lived in the Methodist church
and no man loved his church more devotedly or served it more
loyally. Just a short time before his death he said to one of
his fellow preachers: "I am glad to have you with me but
if you have work that must be done, go on and attend to it; the
work of the church is of more importance than sitting with a
sick preacher."
Brother Clifton was strong in body,
mind, intellect and character. These traits always made him a
man to be trusted and a wise counsellor. He represented his church
in many of its high places and was delegate to the general Conference
which met at Memphis in 1894.
In the pulpit he was strong, thoughtful
and spiritual. No man could sit under his ministry without recognizing
his unusual insight into the things of God as well as the needs
and peculiariteis of human nature. From the pulpit where he preached
there came no uncertain mind. After his retirement from the active
ministry he was ever a willing, faithful and wise counsellor
to his younger brethren and sympathetic and appreciative listener
to those who ministered to him. The writer feels a personal loss
in his going away for his counsel and sympathy have been invaluable.
Brother Clifton took a deep and
keen interest in the affairs of State and Nation and on many
occasions his wise counsel has prevented rash and hasty steps.
Funeral services were conducted
in the Methodist church in Commerce, where he had lived for several
years past, on Monday, Marth 13th, 3 o'clock p.m. The sorrowing
congregation which taxed the capacity of the church bore testimony
to the esteem in which he was held. His pastor, Rev. J. L. Pierce,
preached, being assisted in the services by Revs. O. S. Thomas,
R. C. Hicks, F. O. Miller and J. M. Peterson and a number of
others of his brethren of the ministry present. The ex-Confederates
attended in a body and at the conclusion of the services at the
church the Masons, of which Brother Clifton was a member, took
charge and interred his body with public honors.
A man of positive and pronounced
convictions, as was Rev. W. L. Clifton, will always have whose
who differ with him sharply, and it was so with him, but of all
those who differed with him none could call in question the purity
of his motive or the sincerity of his character.
He died as he had lived, without
fear, as he stated a few hours before his death, "The future
had been attended to years ago," and he was ready to answer
the summons.

ROBERTSON
Mr. James T. Robertson Sr., of Decatur, died June 9, 1987. Surviving
are his wife, Mrs. Leona Clark Robertson, Decatur; daughter,
Mrs. Buddy (Vivian) Parker, Ellenwood; three sons, Mr. and Mrs.
James T. Robertson, Jr., Decatur; Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Robertson,
Lithonia; Mr. and Mrs. Roy E. Robertson, Stockbridge; brother,
Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Robertson, Lithonia; 10 grandchildren,
nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, June
12, 1987 at 1 p.m. from Ward's Glenwood Chapel. Rev. Larry Boswell
officiating. Interment, Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers
assemble at the chapel at 12:45 p.m. The family will receive
friends Thursday evening 7 to 9 p.m. at Horis A. Ward Inc.
