Stephenson, Jr., January 2002 MRS PHEBE CHAPMAN - a mother in Israel. Heaven has gained another saint to sing of redeeming love. Mrs. Phebe Chapman died at the residence of one of her children in DeKalb county, Ga. August 29th 1867, in the 76th year of her age. She united with the Baptist church at Bethel, Warren county, Ga. - baptized by John Roberson. She lived a devoted member of the Baptist church for 54 years. The writer was her pastor for a number of years, and often cited her as an example of persevering devotion to the church and regrets that so few of the members were as zealous as she. She suffered the loss of all things earthly with great Christian fortitude. She spoke of death with composure, and sometimes with rapture. Her last words were Hallelujah, and then she fell asleep. She died an affectionate mother, and mother of Israel leaving many affectionate children and grand children to weep their irreparable loss. But their loss is her eternal gain. “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord; yea, they rest from their labor, and their works do follow them.” C. C.
