"Columbia County, Georgia, was created from Richmond, December 10th, 1790.  Richmond was officially made a county February 5th, 1777, 

having been previously organized as Parish of St. Paul in 1758.

Columbia is indeed important to genealogy researchers, Richmond was a migratory gateway from South Carolina.

Prior to and after 1790, Revolutionary war veterans were given land bounties in Georgia.  Many such grants ultimately became 

a part of Columbia County. 

The records in this book were originally gathered by the late Mrs. Pearl Baker of Thomson, Georgia. 

Mrs. Baker was efficient and did not overlook a detail.

Mrs. Mary Carter of Albany, Georgia, publisher of Georgia Pioneers, a quarterly genealogy magazine, contracted with Mrs. Baker

to use the material.  It appeared in a series of more than four years.

Mrs. Carter and I agree that such information would serve a useful purpose if incorporated into one volume with an

index included for cross reference."
