Columbia County was created December 10th 1790 from the northern part of Richmond County. Columbia gave land to Warren County on December 19, 1793, in March 1856 Columbia took more land from Richmond County, gave land to McDuffie County in October of 1870 (when McDuffie was created), gave more land to McDuffie and took some from McDuffie in August of 1872. It was the 12th county formed in Georgia. It is named for Christopher Columbus. Appling is the county seat. Columbia County lies along the Savannah River in east central Georgia, bordering South Carolina, just northwest of Augusta. In the colonial era, the territory that constitutes Columbia County was laid out as a part of St. Paul Parish. It was created in response to a request by backcountry settlers that they be given court sessions that would be more convenient than those held in Augusta.

This is the official home page of the Columbia County GAGenWeb Project. We are a group of volunteers working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical research in every county in the State of Georgia. This project is non-commercial and fully committed to free access for everyone. GAGenWeb Project members are located throughout the world, not just in Georgia. We rely on the resources of the Internet and on volunteers who are able to transcribe primary documents to assist us in getting information on line.
