Coffee County History
Coffee County was formed on February 9, 1854 by an act of the General Assembly of
the House and Senate of the State of Georgia. The said new county would be formed and named Coffee, after Gen. John E Coffee, a former soldier, State Legislator, and Congressman. It further stated that Coffee County would be attached to the Southern Judicial District. Coffee was formed from lands once included within the boundaries of Clinch, Ware, Telfair and Irwin counties. Most of this land was once a part of the 'parent county' of Appling, which was formed in 1818 and awarded in 490 acre Land Lots by the means of a Land Lottery.
