This will was found in the Ashley-Slater House, now the Douglas Welcome Center, during the recent restoration project.

State of Georgia
Coffee County

                                    In the name of God, Amen!  I, Narcissa Friar of the State of Georgia and county of Coffee being weak and infirm in body and aware of my approaching dissolution, but of sound mind, memory, and discretion and having a decided and rational desire as to the disposition of the property which I possess or may hereafter possess.  Do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following to wit:
                                    First, I recommend myself to God the Giver and Creator of all good, sincerely thanking Him for all blessings, civil and religious conferred upon me during my existence in this changeable and uncertain life.
                                    Item 1:  My will is that all my just debts be paid if any I owe at the time of my death and that I be buried in a manner suitable to my condition in life.
                                    Item 2:  I give bequeath and desire to my beloved grandson, J.M. Ashley the following real property to wit.  Lots of land numbers (281) two hundred eighty-one and (272) two-hundred and seventy two lying and being in the original first District of the county of Appling now in the county of Coffee aforesaid - containing (490) four hundred and ninety acres more or less each and both together containing (980) nine hundred and eighty acres to have and to hold unto the said J.M. Ashley and his heirs forever and to their own proper use benefit and behoof.
                                    Item 3:  I give and bequeath to my said grandson J.M. Ashley the following personal property to wit:  all my cattle now in my possession marked, straight split and widen bits in one ear and under bit in the other ear, and branded with a cross and all other cattle that I shall own or possess in my own right at the time of my death; and all my hogs marked crop and split in one ear and all the hogs that I shall own or possess in my own right at the time of my death; and one dark Roan horse now in my possession named Nightingale; and one buggy and one hourse cart now in my possession; and all my household and kitchen furniture of every class and description to his own proper use benefit and behoof.
                                    Item 4:  I give bequeath and desire unto my said beloved grandson J.M. Ashley, all my property both real and personal and mixed of every kind class and description that I shall own, have, or possess at the time of my death in my own right, without any restriction or reservation whatever to his own proper use, benefit and behoof.
                                    Item 5:  I hereby appoint Joseph J. Lewis executor of this my last will and testament.  This 31st day of Dec. 1888.

Signed, declared, and published by Narcissa Friar as her last will and testament in the presence of us the subscribers who subscribe our names hereto in the presence of said testatrix ( and at her instance and request) and in the presence of each other she signing in our presence and we signing  in her presence.
