Cemeteries of Cobb County

Cemeteries of Cobb County, GA

Please note that Cobb County has almost as many cemeteries as it has churches, schools and pizza parlors (actually 236 to 240).  We are in the process of recording these cemeteries.  It will take some time.  As an experiment, we are taking digital pictures of the gravestones in some of the cemeteries.  The pictures will be changed to display the name on the stone, and they will be uploaded into a directory without an index page.  No adjustments will be made to the color, the size or any other aspect of the picture.  We believe that this will provide more data, without the possibility of scrivener's errors, and not require you to sit through the download of hundreds or thousands of thumbnails, as the pictures will be listed in alphabetical order as they appear in the root directory.  Cemeteries with photographic transcriptions are marked by a camera graphic ().

Did you know?  Did you know that there are at least TWO Revolutionary War veterans buried in Cobb County despite it not being lawful for anyone other than Native Americans to live in what is now Cobb County until AFTER 1806?  Captain John Collins is buried in Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery and Private Peter Groover is buried in Holly Springs Cemetery, although Antioch Cemetery also lays claims to a Peter Groover who was a Revolutionary war veteran.  According to the DAR, there may be as many as 24 known Patriot graves in Cobb County.  We are hunting for them now.  The list may be found here.

We have noticed several very common names in the cemeteries of Cobb County.  These surnames include Groover, Dunn, Gann, Dobbs, Dobbins, Blackwell, McCleskey, Casteel, Chastain, and Gresham.  These names seem to be very common and are located in many of the cemeteries.  If you have any information on these surnames or would locate to donate any genealogical information, please let us know!

While we encourage your feedback on this endeavor, we ask that you not complain about the speed at which these pictures download.  We are doing the hard part for you, and we are giving you the best we have.  However, we do welcome your comments about the overall format and whether you find this to be helpful.

Interesting "Fact-Oids" about cemeteries (for those who are interested in the story behind the story).

Many of these pictures have some notation after them.  Many times, the notation is the NAME by which the person was called if that name is on the tombstone.  There are other abbreviations, which can be located here.

All efforts are made to hide or delete the names of persons without any indication of death on the tombstone (with souses, it is not uncommon to have both names placed on the stone when it is created, although only one spouse has died).  However, where there is no indication of death and the person was born 90 or more years ago or, where the grave appears to have been opened or there are recent flowers, we make the assumption that the person is deceased.  We understand that this might be incorrect in rare cases.  Please advise us if this is, and we will make every effort to delete any file misidentifying a person as being deceased.  We assume no liability for any such error.

I was recently asked why I bother taking pictures of the cemeteries and posting them online.  A brief answer may be found here, together with a short, but growing, FAQ on the cemeteries of Cobb County, Georgia.

We have been working hard on visiting the local cemeteries and will be uploading them as time allows.  Among the cemeteries visited are Citizens Cemetery (to complete, but not completed yet - it's HUGE), Macland Cemetery, Sandy Plains Baptist Church Cemetery, Sandy Plains Cemetery (possibly Old Sandy Plains) and others.  Some of the cemeteries (Hardage, New Salem, Flemister and Dugger, to name a few) are no longer where the map says they are supposed to be.  Other cemeteries are locked and the powers that be do not seem interested in assisting with access.

NEW!!  Know the area but not the cemetery name?  Try our locations listing!

We are moving the cemetery pictures to Cemetery Surveys, Inc.
