With the passing of Mr.
Carl Sanders, long time employee of Milstead, went the passing
of the old 'Country Store' located a few miles north of Milstead on
Georgia Highway 20.
Mr. Carl was a member of the
25-year Club. He received the award in 1944. He was a repairman in
the spinning room and retired on his 65th birthday. When his wife
retired, they operated the country store full time. The store was a
tradition and a way of life. Many old times have fond memories of
the store's happy friendly atmosphere. There they gathered around
the potbellied stove to swap news and tall tales.
A well-stocked country store
supplied the farmer's wife with items like fruit jars, lids and
rings, washtubs, hoop cheese, clothespins, pots, pans, etc. Around
the store they learned the latest news - the arrival of a new baby,
how crops are progressing and the prospects of the coming election.
Where his store was once
located now stands a modern superstore. Things have changed
considerably. Syrup is no longer sold from the tap; crackers, sugar,
and flour are no longer displayed in open barrels.
President Eisenhower
suggested once during his years in the White House that grocery
store owners recreate the old 'cracker barrel' atmosphere. Until his
passing, Mr. Carl did just that. Mr. and Mrs. Sanders had one
daughter, Betty Sanders Wigley. She recently built a new home
in sight of her Dad's Country Store. |
