I got the chance to stop by
Milstead for a quick, spur-of-the-moment visit recently while I was
on my way back home from a meeting. I was driving back towards
Atlanta on I-20 and pulled off at the Conyers Main Street exit.
Then I got lost!!!
I realized how long it had been
since I'd been to Conyers when nothing looked like I remembered it.
The roads were wider with more lanes. Strip malls and fast-food
restaurants overpowered the old landmarks I remembered. The local
video store my sister-in-law used to work at is now a Blockbuster.
The hospital has more than doubled in size and is under construction
- it looks like it's going to double in size again! I had to look at
it again to see if it was the same hospital.
I went to Eastview Cemetery and
visited my father's grave. I visited the grave's of my grandparents,
uncles and many other relatives who were members of the Milstead
community. I saw the grave's of many of the people I knew or heard
of throughout my childhood and people I have gotten to know a little
through this website.
When I pulled into Milstead it
was like taking a turn into the past. While it is surrounded by
change and growth, somehow Milstead has remained pretty much the
same. It felt like a calm, quiet and peaceful alcove, buffered from
the busy-ness surrounding it by thick woods.
I drove through the streets and
enjoyed seeing the neat lawns and well cared for houses that had
once been the homes of my relatives and their friends. My
grandfather's barbershop is gone - but the pool is still there with
a new playground for the children. The Methodist Church is now the
Word of God Fellowship and Christian Center. I suspect the hard work
of the Milstead Home Owner's Association has a lot to do with the
look and feel of the village. Milstead is a very pleasant village.
It was late in the afternoon and
starting to get dark - but I managed to get a few pictures. I hope
you enjoy them. |
