1912 Barbecue

'Bob H. Elliott, postmaster and store proprietor, remembers the picnic given by the Company July 4, 1912 for the employees and their families. It was the highlight of the year. The day was long remembered by those attending.

The day's activities included  square dancing on a special platform with an imported string band. There were races, both foot and sack races. Others participated in catching a greased pig or climbing a greased pole for a prized silver dollar. The younger group had swings. There was plenty of pink lemonade and ice cream to go with the barbecue and brunswick stew. A ballgame on the nearby baseball field completed the day.

Bob Elliott is the son of Mr. Tom Elliott. The family operated 'The Big Store' as it was called from the day it opened until Mr. Bob closed it in 1962.'
