Old Salt Springs Campground Cemetery

Location: Abandoned cemetery is in the woods. From Thornton Road, go west on Bankhead Highway to Lakeside Drive, turn left, take right on Highland Terrace by the lake. The graves are scattered in the woods behind the 1982 home of Clyde Shaddix. The first five graves are in a separate section:

1. Sacred to the memory of Samuel G. Mozley, the husband of Elizabeth Mozley who departed this life on the 27th of July 1854 in the 65th year of his age, leaveing (sic) a wife & 12 children to mourn his irepairable (sic) loss, gone forever where the weary are at rest.

2. His wife Elizabeth Bankston is buried adjacent. She died c. Aug. 18, 1864 and his footstone, marked S.G.M., was placed at the head of her grave.

3. Unmarked rock believed to be their son: Hiram Harry Mozley, 1827-1864.

4. Unmarked rock believed to be their son: Edward Mozley, c. 1822-Oct. 8, 1862.

5. Unmarked rock believed to be their son: Samuel Bankston Mozley, 1832-March 23, 1865.

6. Alexander D. McEwen, born Jun 5, 1812, died Dec. 26, 1889.

7. Rhoda McEwen, born June 11, 1815, died Aug. 30, 1884/Faithful to her trust/Even unto death/Having finished life's duty/She now sweetly rests.

8. Mary Melvina McEwen, born Feb. 8, 1844, died Oct. 15, 1872/Asleep in Jesus.

9. G.A. Winn, Feb. 28, 1836-Aug. 12, 1876/father. (Note: George A. Winn was the first husband of Nancy Anna Mozley Winn Blair; he was the son of the Rev. Francis Winn.)

10. Jasper Bullard, born Jan. 7, 1846, died Feb. 9, 1888/Dear is the spot where Christians sleep/And sweet the strains that angels pour/Oh! Why should we in anguish weep/They are not lost but gone before. (Note: This marble box tomb is now destroyed.)

11. Nancy C. Bullard, born May 27, 1846-died April 22, 1926/In love she lived/Her lived was craved/In peace she died/ But God denied. (Note: This marble box tomb is now destroyed.)

12. In memory of Isabella Southerland, born Dec. 29, 1876, departed this life May 18, 1877. (Note: Broken.)

13. Mrs. Alice Milford, born March 16, 1857, died Oct. 16, 1885. (Note: Broken. Alice Jenkins m. 1880 Seaborn T. Milford, son of John William Milford and Mary Catherine Thomason.)

14. George Peterson, died June 9, 1909.

15. E.C. Bullard, Oct. 6, 1873-Jan. 1, 1874.

16. G.W. Latham, born Dec. 1, 1872/father (no death date).

17. Martha M. Latham, born Oct. 16, 1874, died June 20, 1903/mother.
